Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the university. The Program Director at KUNR is responsible for conducting analysis of programs using audience ratings, planning programming changes based on data and providing data to on-air talent. Additionally, the Program Director hosts assigned programs with a professional sound and presence in keeping with station standards for on-air performance. The Program Director is responsible for ensuring a high-quality listening experience and the seamless execution of technical/logistical operations. The position reports to the KUNR Station Manager. 2. List the major responsibilities, including percentage of time devoted to each. Provide enough detail to enable a person outside the department to understand the job (percentage first with heading and then bulleted information). 55% - Program Direction and Planning Analyze and interpret audience ratings data Utilize ratings information, trends and market data for program evaluation Research and evaluate current and potential programs Initiate discussions with the station manager on suggestions for improving station programming, content, execution or sound of the station Coordinate the writing, editing or production of station promotions and PSAs Update online and social media program information and promotions Establish procedures to ensure programs, announcements and other broadcast elements are aired as scheduled Consistently review and provide feedback on the consistency of local announcements and “sound” of the station Prepare and post news content, audio, text and graphics to the website, social media and other appropriate media Resolve issues (equipment, personnel, etc.) as a member of management team Participate in fundraising drives, including planning and coordination of special programs Supervise on-air talent 45% - Broadcasting Perform live over-the-air broadcasting Ensure all underwriting announcements and broadcast log elements for assigned shifts are broadcasted and documented Follow station guidelines and program “clocks” to provide accurately timed broadcasts Monitor the Emergency Alert System, news developments, road conditions, traffic, weather and other items to broadcast timely information and updates Complete daily administrative broadcast duties Record and edit promotional announcements, interviews and other material Act as a board operator for call-in shows and fundraising drives Ensure current FCC regulations are followed and communicated to on-air staff to maintain legal radio operations Participate in station and community initiatives or programs Prepare and gather news as assigned or determined by news priorities Announce news live or produce recorded news reports for on-air playback Provide editorial feedback for news team as necessary Position Description – Program Director, KUNR Page 3 3. Level of Freedom: The Program Director is expected to make regular recommendations and has authority in managing the on-air talent. The Program Director conducts analyses of data and makes decisions and judgments on program selection and presentation within the overall programming philosophy and format provided by the Director. These decisions are critical to ensuring that KUNR is presenting high quality programs and attracting a broad group of members and listeners. The Station Manager advises on personnel and reviews recommendations on programming changes and problems. Impact: The Program Director’s decision making has an immediate and lasting impact on the station’s quality and overall perception. Decisions made help increase audience listening and encourage financial support for the station. Likewise, incorrect decisions will cause audience tune-out and diminishing audience financial support. Failing to adhere to Federal and state laws could have legal implications for the University. 4. Describe the knowledge, skills (to include cognitive requirement and verbal and written communication), and abilities (to include task complexity, problem solving, creativity and innovation) essential to successful performance of this job (in bullet format).
