1. Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the
university. Attach an organizational chart with positions, ranges, and names for the division
which reflects the position in it as well as those supervised in the department. (This section is
used for advertisement of the position.)
The Institutional Research Analyst performs varied institutional research and analyst activities
necessary for the development and provision to the university administrators and managers of
information needed for making informed management and policy decisions and to provide support to
the Director of Institutional Analysis in fulfillment of program goals and objectives. Incumbent is
responsible for development and compilation of statistical data for use in preparation of internal and
external reports, surveys, and requests and development and maintenance of documentation of study
designs and procedures to ensure consistency in results.

40% - Analytical Studies Preparation
 Initiate, design and conduct analytical studies to respond to the needs of institutional
managers at all levels
 Perform varied online data collection and reporting and analysis tasks to support university
administration and academic units with institutional research data
 Determine and anticipate informational needs through consultation and through keeping
abreast of issues affecting the University and higher education in general
 Conduct studies on various aspects of the institution for the purpose of providing information
for policy and decision-making in academic and fiscal planning and utilization, policy analysis,
work flow, and other administrative areas
 Present findings and make recommendations through oral and/or written reports
35% - Information Dissemination
 Organize and disseminate information about the institution including results developed from
activities above to the following groups: federal government, state government, other state
governments; other universities, business and industry, the governing board, university
administration, the media, students and private citizens
 Maintain contacts with other institutional researchers/analysts at universities and colleges both
within and outside the State of Nevada to collaborate and share information
 Report data on student enrollment to support content and production of the University fact
book and other office reports; respond to survey responses and production of descriptive
studies on institutional activities that cvoer a wide range of operational domains
 Assignment involves: a) primary responsibility for creation and publication of the University of
Nevada, Reno (UNR) Databook; b) when necessary, overseeing and guiding the activities of
the Management Analyst (or similar position) in production and preparation of the Databook
(paper and web versions); c) designing new studies for inclusion in the Databook and other
publications; and d) the production of a variety of management reports from the Databook and
other sources in order to provide data and analysis for informed decision-making by managers
at all levels
25% - Program Plan Development and Maintenance
 In conjunction with the Director, the Assist Vice President, Administration and Finance, and
other staff, develop aspects of the Institutional Analysis program through consultation and
discussion in viewing needs, setting objectives, charting the direction of the research and
evaluation activities, and planning for the future

Foster development of institutional research skills and expertise of co-workers through
training, teamwork, and creative problem-solving while following the guidelines set forth in the
Association for Institutional Research Code of Ethics
Participate in team discussions for developing appropriate methodology and processes and
related problem-solving
Provide staff training when needed
Ensure appropriate documentation of the institutional study designs and procedures
3. Describe the level of freedom to take action and make decisions with or without
supervision and how the results of the work performed impact the department, division and/or
the university as a whole.
Level of Freedom:
The Research Analyst is directly involved in the process of producing data on the operational activity
of the University in such a way as to make possible informed policy decisions by those charged with
managing the institution. The position consults with the Director in methodologies for completing
major data requests or projects when outcome affects the entire University.
Impact:
Management and budgetary decisions made on the basis of faulty information could create additional
expense or loss of revenue for the University. Errors in judgment or in computation could negatively
affect credibility of and thereby confidence in office output. This would reduce the office’s
effectiveness in achieving its goals and limit administrators’ ability to rely on institutional information.

Knowledge of:
 Association of Institutional Research Code of Ethics
 Governmental (national, state, local) and industry (e.g., accreditation agencies) regulations
governing the collecting and reporting of data
 Institutional, divisional, and departmental mission and goals
 University academic departments and programs, including their organization and requirements
 Budgeting and finance methodologies
 Data management and reporting (i.e., management information systems) and/or quantitative
analysis (i.e., statistics)
Skills:
 Advanced proficiency in use of a personal computer and current software applications
including but not limited to Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Access, Excel, PowerPoint, and
email) to include SQL querying of data warehouses
Ability to:
 Do and to understand various types of statistical analyses and to present in a useful,
understandable fashion
 Collect, compile, and appropriately format data to compare/inspect data and judge whether
they are similar to prescribed standards or other data, and to detect subtle differences in and
limitations of data

Develop descriptive quantitative studies
Establish meaningful criteria for the arrangement of data, and ability to judge appropriateness
of presentation methods
Write analytical reports to explain results of studies and to interpret results of studies, and to
explain methodology and/or procedure
Use creative problem-solving in the modification and/or adaptation of study designs,
procedures, or methods to achieve desired results in the most efficient and accurate manner
Guide those working on or assisting with projects by organizing work flow to accomplish
established objectives, delegating responsibility, and training
Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with all levels within and without the
University
Work as part of a team
Speak on a one-to-one or small group basis to obtain information and for explanation of
policies/procedures/methodologies, interpret data and explain results, participate in
formulation of methodologies using input of group, propose studies, and examine policies
