1. Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the
university. Attach an organizational chart with positions, ranges, and names for the division

The Industrial Hygienist in Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) initiates the development and
implementation of programs that are necessary to promote and maintain a safe and healthy
environment for students, faculty, staff and the visiting public at University of Nevada, Reno facilities
throughout the State. The incumbent has the primary responsibility for providing industrial hygiene
services that include recognition, evaluation, and control of health hazards in the workplace. The
incumbent plans, conducts and completes worksite assessments, determines the source and severity
of potential hazards, which could include physical, chemical and/or biological exposure, analyzes
findings, and recommend appropriate corrective measures or controls. The incumbent develops
policies and programs, which ensure compliance with applicable federal and state health and safety
requirements, and oversees the implementation of these standard operating procedures. The
incumbent functions as the primary liaison for any Occupational Safety and Health Administration
(OSHA) inspection. The position reports to the Assistant Director, EH&S (Environmental Programs).
2. List the major responsibilities, including percentage of time devoted to each. Provide

60% - Industrial Hygiene / Indoor Air Quality
 Plan and conduct assessments of laboratory, classroom, office and other work spaces to
determine air quality and quantity, identify inadequacies and recommend appropriate
corrective measures using specialized instrumentation, laboratory services, employee reports,
engineering data and professional knowledge. These activities may occur during emergency
conditions or may require long term investigations
 Respond to complaints/reports of poor air quality, odors, or potential exposures
 Collect and analyze air, water or chemical samples in suspect situations and apply standard
operating procedures to improve conditions found unacceptable
 Maintain and calibrate instrumentation used to monitor air quality and ventilation
 Verify performance of local exhaust ventilation systems
 Assist in the design of proper ventilation systems, or review the designs of ventilation systems
submitted by other engineers or architects
 Conduct respirator fit-testing for all employees that require the use of a respirator as part of
their course of employment
 Plan, conduct and assess work areas for noise concerns. This includes completing noise
surveys and dosimeter measurements.
30% - Program Management
 Develop and implement programs/policies to protect faculty, staff and students against
excessive exposure to physical or chemical workplace hazards
 Investigate employee and/or external complaints, recommend appropriate corrective
measures, and assist in the implementation of such corrective actions
 Plan and conduct comprehensive facility inspections, reviews and on-site surveys for the
identification, evaluation, control and correction of industrial hygiene or environmental hazards

Work with faculty, supervisors, principal investigators and other department professionals to
negotiate work practice changes to ensure provision of a high standard of industrial hygiene to
protect faculty, staff, students, and campus visitors; changes may involve mechanical
ventilation and local control systems, changes in personal protective equipment, or
fundamental changes in standard protocols and/or operating procedures
Work with regulatory officials to ensure compliance with federal, state and local health, safety
and environmental rules and regulations; ensure compliance with University policies and
procedures; evaluate the impact of new or proposed regulations and modify existing programs,
services or procedures as necessary
Function as the primary liaison for any OSHA inspection
Conduct review of new construction and remodel plans for potential occupational health and
safety issues
Monitor budgets for industrial hygiene expenditures; oversee purchase of industrial
hygiene/environmental sampling or monitoring equipment and the routine maintenance and
calibration of field service instruments, devices and supplies
10% - Professional Development & Training
 Maintain current levels of professional knowledge and awareness of contemporary techniques,
laws, and standards by continued study, professional society activities, use of the internet, and
attendance at technical meetings and training programs
 Develop, conduct and coordinate training programs for EH&S staff and members of the
campus community in the areas of occupational health and safety
3. Describe the level of freedom to take action and make decisions with or without
supervision and how the results of the work performed impact the department, division and/or
the university as a whole.
Level of Freedom:
The Industrial Hygienist carries out the daily defined functions of the position independently. The
incumbent must exercise independent judgment and professional knowledge when making
assessments, recommendations, and providing policy and procedural assistance that is influenced by
the best professional standards in the field. The position consults with the Assistant Director on issues
relating to long-term safety strategies and goals of the department and University.
Impact:
A well-managed industrial hygiene program can protect the health and safety of UNR faculty, staff,
students, and visitors and can significantly reduce risk factors and liabilities; therefore, the judgments,
opinions, and recommendations made by this position directly impact the university at all levels.
Decisions determine whether illness or injury to students and employees may be avoided; the
University will incur legal liability in cases of accidental exposure, illness or injury; University assets
will be damaged or lost; and if the University will remain in compliance with applicable health and
safety regulations. Likewise, decisions or instructions that do not represent best professional
standards to health and safety could result in termination of various University licenses and privileges,
revocation of operating permits, loss of research funding from some sponsors, emergency redirection
of budgets at the expense of unrelated activities, and damaging publicity in the eyes of parents,
benefactors, and community supporters.

Bachelor’s Degree from a regionally accredited institution.

Minimum type and amount of work experience, in addition to the above required
education necessary for a person entering this position.
Bachelor’s Degree and four years, or a Master’s Degree and two years, of full time
professional industrial hygiene or occupational safety duties in a higher education or
other research setting, must be skilled in the use, maintenance and calibration of test,
monitoring and sampling instruments used for industrial hygiene applications.
Preferred Licenses or Certifications:
American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH) Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), or
Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
