1. Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the
university. Attach an organizational chart with positions, ranges, and names for the division
which reflects the position in it as well as those supervised in the department. (This section is
used for advertisement of the position.)
The Coordinator, Education in the Area Health Education Center (AHEC) collaborates with the
Assistant Director, AHEC, and other program support staff in providing assistance in the development,
planning, coordination, implementation and evaluation of undergraduate medical education courses,
required and elective, in each of the four years in medical school and clinical rotations in selected
residency graduate education programs that have a community based rural or urban underserved
program component. The coordinator provides liaison and program support to the joint University of
Washington MEDEX physician assistant program and collaborative undergraduate and graduate
health professional education programs as directed. The individual coordinates and facilitates the
SEARCH project with the State of Nevada primary Care Development Center. The Coordinator is
responsible for reporting, tracking and student aspects of the program. The position reports to the
Assistant Director, AHEC.

Major Responsibilities:
 Assist in the identification of clinical sites and potential preceptors, preceptor orientation,
ongoing faculty development
 Coordinate educational experiences including preceptor and support staff
 Promote communication with students, preceptors, on-site staff, university affiliated faculty
 Facilitate multi-factorial course evaluation (course, preceptor, support arrangements)
 Promote site/preceptor/university community relations
70% - Undergraduate Medical Education
 Coordinate the Practice of Medicine Clerkship program which is a required integrated clerkship
in family, adult (internal) and pediatric medicine, a 24-2eek rotation, third year
 Coordinate the Advanced Clinical Experience in Rural Health Care, a required four-week
rotation, fourth year
 Coordinate elective clinical rotations, two to four weeks in length, fourth year
 Coordinate Summer Preceptorships, four to six weeks in length, elective first and second year
15% - Graduate Medical Education
 Coordinate Family Medicine Residency Program, Reno – six-eight residents/year, four week
required, second year and Las Vegas – six-eight residents/year, four week required, second
year
 Coordinate Internal Medicine Residency Program, Reno/Elko – three-ten residents/year, third
year and elective
 Coordinate Graduate medical education programs in development – Internal Medicine – Las
Vegas; Pediatrics – Las Vegas; OB-GYN – Las Vegas

3. Describe the level of freedom to take action and make decisions with or without
supervision and how the results of the work performed impact the department, division and/or
the university as a whole.
Level of Freedom:
The individual assists in the coordination of a number of undergraduate and graduate medical,
nursing, and health professions programs that utilize clinical community faculty as primary preceptors
throughout this state and the neighboring communities in Northern California. The position provides
primary support to housing volunteers and other members of the community that are involved in or
impacted by these outreach education programs. The individual works closely with the Assistant
Director on decisions associated with the position, but must work independently, with initiative, and
with some latitude in decision-making.
Impact:
Because these programs are highly visible in many communities, the collaborative decisions made by
this individual have an impact on the image, reputation and credibility of UNSOM and UNR throughout
the state.
