Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the university. The Coordinator, Education Outreach and Undergraduate Programs, coordinates and implements University of Nevada School of Medicine (UNSOM) undergraduate programs with the University of Nevada, Reno Campus recruitment events, pipeline programs and other activities and programs related to science and medical career education programs of UNSOM on the school’s Reno campus. The position also provides coordination, support and staffing for UNSOM programs targeting diverse communities. The individual functions as the coordinator of the BS-MD Accelerated Degree Program for University students, coordinator for the Science Partners Course, and Reno campus advisor for the UNSOM Post Baccalaureate program. In addition, the position coordinates interview days for UNSOM applicants and is responsible for UNSOM educational partnerships with regional high schools. The position reports to the Director, Recruitment and Student Services. 2. List the major responsibilities, including percentage of time devoted to each. Provide enough detail to enable a person outside the department to understand the job (percentage first with heading and then bulleted information). 25% - BS-MD Program – Reno Campus The BS-MD Program offers a seven-year accelerated pathway to medical school for high school seniors who are focused on a career in medicine. Students accepted into the program complete the first three years of the required undergraduate curriculum at the University of Nevada, Reno. The position is responsible for planning and coordinating all aspects of the BS-MD program with the University, including: Orientation and welcome for students and families BS MD/Medical Student Mentoring program Collaboration with UNR advisors for course registration and advising for BS MD students Monitoring student academic progress Coordinating required clinical experiences for BS MD students, including site development and coordination for the Elko rural experience and the urban underserved sites for northern Nevada Advising for all BS MD students Selection, interview, and data reports for selection process – UNR BS MD students Annual reporting of BS-MD program 25% - Post Baccalaureate Program – Reno Campus The Post-Baccalaureate Program offers a one-year intensive program to help qualified students improve their competitiveness for medical school application. The program currently has undergraduate students at two Nevada campuses. The position serves at the campus advisor for University Post Baccalaureate students. Responsibilities include: Orientation/Welcome event Collaboration with UNR advisors for post-baccalaureate student coursework at the University Monitoring student academic progress Collaboration with post baccalaureate program coordinator based on the LV Campus Collaboration with learning resource coordinator for post-baccalaureate learning skills assessment and Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) preparation Annual reporting of Post-Baccalaureate program Position Description - Coordinator, Educational Outreach and Undergraduate Programs Page 3 10% - Community Outreach – Reno, Year Round Manage and take part in medical school tours and other community programs, such as college and career fairs, and the coordination and collaboration the medical student Medical Education Outreach Committee (MEOC) Facilitate MEOC participation in events and programs Coordinate high school partnerships and other educational outreach in Northern Nevada Identify and coordinate outreach opportunities into diverse communities, organizations, and programs to support the medical school’s diversity efforts and mission 20% - Reno Campus Recruitment Events and Interview Days Coordinate all aspects of Reno campus recruitment events, including applicant interview days, pre-medical student conference and tour, Nevadans Into Medicine, various campus tours and other events as requested Coordinate Science Partners in collaboration with UNR College of Science (COS) and College of Agriculture, Biotechnology, and Natural Resources (CABNR), placing UNR students in elementary classrooms for inquiry-based science Identify and coordinate other campus opportunities or outreach to give students from diverse backgrounds information about opportunities for medical careers and education 10% - Partnership Programs Coordinate and plan all educational partnership programs with regional school districts and high schools including Hug High School Academy for Division of Health Sciences (DHS) 10% Supervision and Other Supervises administrative support and student workers Supports institutional events, e.g., ceremonies and celebrations 3. Level of Freedom: The Coordinator must function independently while making a variety of decisions to insure programs are successful. The position is required to use judgment and good decision-making skills, along with having knowledge of multiple institution and medical school requirements for programs which include a variety of various-age participants. The position consults with the Director on overall planning and final approval of the programs. Impact: These academic programs are vital for cultivating interest in the sciences and health professions for students of all ages with the eventual goal of impacting their career and college decisions. Each of these programs are an important part of the medical schools outreach mission and fulfills the accreditation goal for medical schools to have educational pipeline programs in place to meet standards. These programs are designed to increase the number of students entering science and the medical profession. The programs also serve to enlighten the public about UNSOM as well as the positive perception and reputation of the School of Medicine by institutions of higher education across the state, college students, the K-12 community, the students and their parents.
