Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the university. The Controller oversees the daily fiscal activity for the University of Nevada School of Medicine (UNSOM) for the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) including managing and implementing the financial and related analytical support functions of UNSOM and the direction for the daily financial operations of the Physician Practice Plans: Medschool Associates South (MSAS), Nevada Family Practice Residency Program (NFPRP) and Medschool Associates North (MSAN). Inherent in this responsibility is ensuring the physicians’ offices operate in a financially sound, best practices manner, while ensuring compliance with the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) financial policies. The Controller provides leadership, direction and administrative expertise in the financial aspects of clinical and non-clinical activities. The Controller provides significant input to the CFO in evaluating financial opportunities and improvements and assists in developing recommendations to improve the overall financial health of the school. The Controller is responsible for reporting periodically on the results of financial operations and financial analysis for all school departments (clinical, basic science and administration). 2. Provide enough detail to enable a person outside the department to understand the job (percentage first with heading and then bulleted information). 65% - Fiscal Management – Assists and advises the CFO in the fiscal operations of the academic departments, academic centers, administrative units and the practice plans Oversee and direct all accounting, treasury, insurance, tax and audit related activities pertinent to the day to day clinical operations, academic departments, administrative departments and other units as identified Prepare and maintain all UNSOM fiscal records and reports Determine appropriate handling and approval of all financial transactions In collaboration with the CFO make recommendations regarding the accounting of reserves, assets and expenditures Develop, document and communicate accounting policies and procedures to ensure compliance with all University policy, federal and state regulations and tax laws and to honor restrictions on applicable sources Develop and maintain an internal control system to ensure accuracy and timeliness of all billings and appropriate follow up to ensure timely receipt/write off of outstanding receivables and other appropriate policy, procedure, regulation and laws Serve as principal contact for external constituencies such as bans and auditors Oversee preparation of all practice plan financial statements, management discussion and analysis portion of the statements for the annual audit and data required for the 401(k) and Worker’s Compensation audit Serve as a resource to the departments, chairs and administrative area for appropriate accounting policies and processes; communicate all necessary information in a timely manner Serve as a key management representative for third party payors and hospital executives Work closely with UNSOM’s CFO and the Chief Operating Officer (COO) on strategic initiatives for the school and practice plan as the primary source for financial data to assess impact of decisions Oversee appropriate allocation of faculty salaries and space costs to the practice plans Collaborate with the Budget Group to prepare the practice plan and school budgets Manage and control of the Dean’s resources and commitments Position Description – Controller, University of Nevada School of Medicine Page 3 20% - Financial Reporting – Develop a summary and comprehensive financial package to timely inform the Dean and senior management on the fiscal status of the school and practice plan.
