COYOYTE Call J A N U A R Y 2 S C O U T E R S M O U N TA I N E L E M E N TA RY * 0 1 6 503-353-3250 Dear Parents and Families, Welcome back to school and the new year. I am so excited that we will be starting the new year with our artist in residency program through the Right Brain Initiative along with support from our PTA. This year, Andy Furgeson from Red Yarn productions will be working with all of our students and teachers to help them deepen their understanding of American and Native American history and culture through folk songs and puppetry. Our third through fifth grades will be working with Andy during the months of January and February. Kindergarten through second grade will be working with him during the months of March and April. Some have asked why we have been promoting arts education in recent years. Well known, talented artists such as Andy and groups like Portland Taiko have been able to work directly with our students and teachers because of generous support and funding through the Right Brain Initiative. This support is critical to our educational mission in the 21st century. The mission statement on the Right Brain Website says, The arts enhance every aspect of education from reading to critical thinking, social skills and motivation. Yet, after decades of extreme budget cuts, creative opportunities have all but disappeared from Portland area schools. Poof. And with them, the bright possibilities percolating in the brain cells of our children. ....Our program doesn’t replace existing arts education. Instead, the arts are woven into the core curriculum, giving teachers new tools to engage students in a creative process that connects back to other subjects. We are so grateful for the support of our PTA and the Right Brain Initiative (RBI). Residency programs as well as teaching strategies our teachers have learned through workshops offered by RBI have enabled our teachers to engage our students with instruction at deeper levels in all content areas. This is why arts education is so important. These experiences wouldn’t be possible without RBI and our PTA. We are really looking forward to this upcoming program. We’ll keep you up to date with news about activities in the classroom and student performances in the coming days. Again, welcome back and best wishes for a happy new year! Those items helped support many families this holiday season. Thank you all! Help! We have many coats, sweatshirts, sweaters and lunch boxes in the Lost and Found. We would love to return them to you. Please label your children’s items so they can be easily identified. Thank you to everyone that participated in our Barnes and Noble bookfair! Mrs. Smith is SUPER excited to buy NEW books for our library! Thank you so much for your support! Please come in and check them out! Changing After School Plans? To help ensure the safety of all our children, please always send a signed and dated note detailing your child’s after school change of plans. This includes riding home with a friend, riding a different bus or having a parent pick them up. We know last minute changes are sometimes necessary. Please make every effort to call the school office prior to 2:30 PM if at all possible. Thank you for understanding how important it is for us to know where all our students are going after school. Parents can check student’s meal accounts anytime at: https://www.myschoolbucks.com/ All you need is your student ID# number. This number is on your child’s report cards or you may contact the office. Elementary meal prices for 2015/16 are: Breakfast $1.95 Lunch $2.90 Milk $0.50 Why does my child have a sheep stamp on his or her hand? This means their lunch account balance is less than $10.00. Remember that ALL VISITORS MUST SIGN IN (even if we know you well) and grab a badge when coming in to the school during morning drop off, as well as during the school day. No matter how well we may know you and your family, it is important that we know who is in the building for the safety of our students and visitors, should an emergency occur. If you need to drop something off for your student, you may leave it in the office and we can get it to them. This helps reduce classroom distractions. Thank you very much for helping to keep our school safe! If you child is going to be absent, please call the office before 9:00 am and let us know. Thank you! 503-353-3250 A BIG THANK YOU TO OUR PARENTS THAT ARE ABLE TO VOLUNTEER ON FIELD TRIPS THIS YEAR! District policy states that all field trip volunteers will need to complete a criminal history form. By following this procedure, we ensure the safety of our students. Your participation in this activity is greatly appreciated. Thank you for completing the additional paperwork! The good news is that these forms only need to be completed once every three years and are good for all schools in the district. This paper work can be found on the district web site under the “Parent” tab and then choose “Volunteers”. Forms are also available in the office. Questions? Please call the office 503-353-3250. “БОЛЬШОЕ СПАСИБО родителям, которые в качестве волонтеров смогут сопровождать нас на экскурсиях в этом году!
