PLANNING EFFECTIVE LESSON Most lessons involving work on grammar are built from three basic components : Clarification and focus ( see mat. 23 ) Restricted use activities ( see mat.22 ) Authentic use. These are called the three ARC components. AUTHENTIC USE In a lesson, we need to offer our Ss opportunities to use the language they know to : communicate information and ideas understand what they are reading or hearing incorporate the smaller, individual items of language into the greater body of the language they know. Ss need to use the language to do the things that language can do. This is Authentic use. In oral Authentic use, the main aim is towards communication and fluent use of the language, rather than primarily towards accuracy. Ss will make important decisions about : 1. the meanings they will express 2. How they will express them Thus, Authentic use is the same as skills work ( work on speaking, listening, reading and writing ). The only difference is that the T is making a direct connection to work on grammar.
