On your own – choose ONE writing portfolio task – this can only be done in class. Do this in a Word
Document. Write one-two paragraphs only on:
Masters of War:
Creative: your character is a young man, approximately 19 years old, who has been drafted to the Vietnam
War. Your parents are proud of you and expect you to serve your country as your father did in the Korean
War. However many of your friends are avoiding the draft, believing that they shouldn’t have to fight and die
on the whims of the people in power. What does your character think, and what do they do? Write in first
person as if it was a journal entry.
OR
Opinion: The military industrial complex relies on ever increasing funds for the military and private
companies that support the military at any cost. The current US Department of Defence has a budget of
$1.9 Trillion. Write an opinion piece on whether your think this money is justified spending, and if you think
it could be better distributed elsewhere. Research what is covered by Military spending and think about
what is necessary and what isn’t. Think of your audience and ensuring you have an authentic voice.
Two and Two:
Creative: as if you are the young boy known as Student 2 who goes against his teacher. Write a dramatic
monologue of the thoughts inside Student 2’s head as he debates whether to challenge his teacher. Think
about his voice, bravery, dilemma and the act of protest. You write in the first person (I).
OR
Opinion: You are a teenage Iranian citizen caught up in the horrors of the Mahsa Amini protests. Write an
opinion-based blog post for teens overseas who are wanting to know more about what is happening to
Iranians and why protesting is important. Think of your audience and ensuring you have an authentic voice.
