Kindergarten News for the weeks of: October 19-October 30 email: kathleen.brawley@lz95.org phone: 847-540-4791 Happy Halloween! Thank you to everyone who helped us have a great day today! The kindergartners looked fantastic in their costumes and they loved parading around! I appreciate your support during Red Ribbon Week as well. It has been a busy, busy time! Literacy Development Phonics and Word Study -We talk about books every day and are learning to have collaborative conversations with our partners. We say things like, “I agree” and “I noticed that too.” -We are learning about punctuation and having fun reading like storytellers. Exclamation marks and ellipses (…) are our favorites! -We have finished introducing the Jolly Phonics sounds! We will continue to practice the sounds at school, especially the two letter “teams”. Extra practice at home is very helpful! -We are working on breaking words into syllables by clapping. We are learning to sound out longer words one syllable at a time when writing. Math -We continue to use the number track as a tool to help determine relative position. -We are using positional language (above, below, beside, left, right, on top of, etc.) -We continue to work on recognizing quantities, writing and recognizing numbers to 10 and beyond. -We continue to work on counting on (5, 6, 7, 8 when rolling a 5 and a 3 rather than counting 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8) Science/Social Studies -We learned about the life cycle of a pumpkin and compared and contrasted it with the life cycle of an apple. -We predicted whether apples and pumpkins would float or sink and tested our predictions. -We learned about bats and compared bats and birds.
