Kindergarten News
October 5-October 16
Literacy
-We learned about three
ways to read a book (read
the words, read the pictures,
and retell the story).
-We talked about our
favorite books.
-We have been working with
our “macaroni and cheese
partners” to talk about books.
-We continue to work on
pointing to each word as we
read kindergarten books.
Math
-We used yes/no
graphs as a way
to collect and
analyze
information.
-We continue to
work on
recognizing
quantities by
sight and
numerals to 10.
-We were
introduced to the
number track as
a math tool.
Writing
-We read the book To Be A Kid and learned that writers
share information about things they know. We
discussed things we know a lot about-we have a lot of
experts in our room!
-We have been using our new writing folders to help us
come up with ideas. Thank you for your help with this
project!
Science and Social Studies
-We read fiction and non-fiction books about
firefighters and fire safety.
-We learned about “pushes and pulls” as ways to
make objects move.
. Halloween
-Kindergartners should WEAR THEIR COSTUMES to school on
Friday October 30th. Please leave any toy weapons at home.
-We will be parading through the school at 9:15 am. Parents are
welcome to watch us parade from the lobby. The all-school
parade through the neighborhood will be at 1:30. Families are
welcome to line the parade route! Parties will follow the
parades.
Jolly Phonics
-We have learned a lot of
sounds and motions, and the
children are using the
motions to help them as they
write. This week, we have
been working on “partner
letters”, including ch, sh, and
th. These often take more
practice before they are
mastered. Thank you for
your help at home!
Homework
-Your child’s most important
homework is reading with a
grown up every night! This is a
great opportunity to talk
about books and learn sight
words in context.
-If you are working on the
October homework calendar,
your child can bring it back to
school after November 1. They
will be able to choose a small
prize from the prize basket.
Sight Words
We practice sight words on a
daily basis at school, but
many children need additional
practice for these words to
become automatic. Please
practice reading our words
with your child, particularly as
you read together. The
words we have learned so
far are: I, a, see, the, can, like
& little. Next week we will
work on the words be & look.
Cold Weather is Coming!
-Please help your child to become independent in getting
coats, boots, shoes, gloves, etc. on and off as winter weather
approaches. When we spend less time getting ready, we have
more time for learning. Thank you!
