Reading Fluency
Strategy: Repeated Readings
Appropriate Grade Level: 2nd-8th grade
Procedures/Steps:
1. Sit with student in a place with limited distractions.
2. Select a passage of 100-200 pages.
3. Have student read passage, aloud or silently
4.If student misreads words or hesitates for more than
5 seconds, read word aloud and have student repeat
word correctly before continuing. If student asks for help,
read word aloud. Give definitions if requested.
5. When student completes passage, have him or her
read it again. You can choose to have them read passage
4 times or until they read passage at a rate of 85-100 words
per minute.
Comments/Tips:
- For preparation, have teacher, parent, or adult working with student trained in advance
to use the listening passage preview approach.
- You may need a stopwatch if readings are to be timed.
- Provide praise to the student in specific terms for good reading.
- Allow students to pick out high interest books to use.
