Math: Fractions Strategy: Fractions on a string number line. Appropriate Grade Level: Middle school Procedures/Steps: 1. Prepare cards with a variety of fractions between 0-1. • Some can be easy such as 1/3, 1/4, and 4/5 and some can be harder. 2. Develop a long line made out of string, with the number 0 on one end and 1 on the other end. 3. Give the students one fraction card and ask them to go place that number in the correct spot on the number line. 0 1/4 1/3 3/4 15/16 1 4. Then have the student explain why they chose to place the fraction on that spot. 5. Ask other students to determine if the student is correct. Comments and/or Tips: • This strategy could be done as a large group or in small groups. • Provides a hands on activity that gets away from the traditional worksheets • Allows you to observe what each child knows or is struggling with. • This strategy will reach many learning styles.
