Title: Melvin’s Make a Match
-
Purpose: Students will practice matching a pictorial representation of a fraction with the
fraction.
-
Grade Level/TEKS Reference: 4th grade
Number and Operations. The student applies mathematical process standards to represent and
generate fractions to solve problems. The student is expected to:
(A) represent a fraction a/b as a sum of fractions 1/b, where a and b are whole numbers and b > 0,
including when a > b;
(C) determine if two given fractions are equivalent using a variety of methods, including multiplying
by a fraction equivalent to one, or simplifying a fraction to lowest terms;
(D) generate equivalent fractions to create equal numerators or equal denominators to compare two
fractions with unequal numerators and unequal denominators and represent the comparison of two
fractions using the symbols >, <, or =;
;
- Length of time necessary for game or activity: 20-30 minutes
-
Number of Participants: There will be one learner stationed at each computer

Procedure:
1. State objective and focus of the activity.
2. Review the goal of the activity: The goal of Melvin’s Make a Match is to help
Melvin put his potion bottles, which are mixed up, in their correct places by
matching bottles with a fraction equivalent to other bottles labeled with shaded
pictures. The fractions need to be matched up according to their equivalent
representation among fractions and pictorial models.
3. Start by clicking on one of the bottles, then click on another bottle that has an
equivalent fraction.
4. Hint:
 The grey shapes are the numerator (top part of a fraction). The grey shapes
plus the white shapes are the denominator (bottom part of a fraction).
 The match might be a fraction made of numbers or shapes.
Example:
Number = Shape
Number = Number
Shape = Shape
5. The game becomes more difficult as you win each round.
