Title: Fraction Addition Smartboard Game Purpose: Students will add fractions using fraction bars. Grade Level/TEKS Reference: 4th Grade (3) Number and operations. The student applies mathematical process standards to represent and generate fractions to solve problems. The student is expected to: (A) represent a fraction a/b as a sum of fractions 1/b, where a and b are whole numbers and b > 0, including when a > b; (B) decompose a fraction in more than one way into a sum of fractions with the same denominator using concrete and pictorial models and recording results with symbolic representations; Length of time necessary for game or activity: There is no set time, the game will continue as long as the player continues to press next. Number of Participants: Students may play individually or with partners Source for Game or Activity: http://dreamboxlearning.com/teachertools Then scroll down to 4th Grade Addition & Subtraction: Adding Fractions Procedure: Fraction addition problems are provided for students. Students may use any of the fraction bars provided to add to the bottom box that will assist them in solving the problem. Students may use each bar more than once, and some not at all if they choose. Students may click the “hint” button that will provide hash marks on the bottom box that will assist students in solving the equation. Once students have added their fraction bars, they will click done. Students will then solve the equation and enter it into the blank space provided. Once the equation is correctly answered, students will click next to solve a new problem. Adapted by: Elisia Mitchell (2014)
