Title: Fraction Addition Smartboard Game
Purpose: Students will add fractions using fraction bars.
Grade Level/TEKS Reference: 4th Grade
(3) Number and operations. The student applies mathematical process standards to represent
and generate fractions to solve problems. The student is expected to:
(A) represent a fraction a/b as a sum of fractions 1/b, where a and b are whole numbers
and b > 0, including when a > b;
(B) decompose a fraction in more than one way into a sum of fractions with the same
denominator using concrete and pictorial models and recording results with symbolic
representations;
Length of time necessary for game or activity: There is no set time, the game will continue as long as
the player continues to press next.
Number of Participants: Students may play individually or with partners

Procedure:

Fraction addition problems are provided for students.

Students may use any of the fraction bars provided to add to the bottom box that will assist
them in solving the problem.

Students may use each bar more than once, and some not at all if they choose.

Students may click the “hint” button that will provide hash marks on the bottom box that will
assist students in solving the equation.

Once students have added their fraction bars, they will click done.

Students will then solve the equation and enter it into the blank space provided.

Once the equation is correctly answered, students will click next to solve a new problem.
