Features

Provides a prototyping platform for both peripheral component interconnect (PCI)

form factor and standalone desktop designs (See Figure 1)

3.3-V PCI board includes an APEX™ 20KE device in a 672-pin FineLine BGA™ package

– Low-priced starter kit with an EPF20K200E device for quick evaluation

– Development kit with an EPF20K400E device for mid-density applications

– Delelopment kit with an EPF20K1000E device for high complexity designs

Supports PCI designs from 32- to 64-bits and 33- to 66-MHz operation

Features a 66-MHz PCI reference design Programmer Object File (.pof

) that includes the PCI/MT64 core, a DMA, an SDRAM controller, FIFO buffers, and control logic; source code is included for the DMA, FIFO buffers, and control logic

Supports hardware design verification and system performance measurement for use in PCI and desktop development environments

The board features:

– Support for 16RX and TX channel LVDS I/O pins

– Standard PMC connector for off-the-shelf PMC expansion cards

– I/O prototype area for custom logic daughter cards

– DB9 connector for RS-232 serial communication

– 144-pin small outline DIMM 32-Mbyte SDRAM module

– Voltage regulator automatically generates 1.8 V and 2.5 V from a 3.3-V power supply

Requires a 3.3-V PC system or a 5.0-V PC system using an extender card to support 3.3-V

PCI boards (see the APEX 20KE PCI Development Kit page on the Altera web site for a partial listing of available extender cards)

Supports in-circuit reconfigurability (ICR) with flash or EEPROM devices and a download cable

Flexible clocking options for on-board logic, including PCI clock, on-board crystal oscillator, or external clock

SB 55: APEX 20KE PCI Starter & Development Kits

General Description

The APEX 20KE PCI Development Kit is extremely versatile and can be used to prototype a wide variety of custom designs coupled with Altera MegaCore ® functions or AMPP SM partner functions. On-board resources include socketed SDRAM, PMC connectors, and an RS-232 port. In addition, the board provides a prototyping area that can implement custom off-chip logic. The APEX 20KE PCI development board

provides a flexible clock distribution network and in-circuit reconfigurability. Figure 2

shows a diagram of the APEX 20KE development board layout.

The Windows-based application software included with the board makes measuring

data transfer speeds attained through Altera PCI functions easy. Figure 3 shows an

example of the user interface.

The 66-MHz PCI reference design helps the developer connect the user design to the

Altera PCI core local-side bus. The APEX 20KE PCI Development Kit User Guide describes the interface signals using example functions such as the DMA and SDRAM controllers.
