LET US REMEMBER!!
The end of October ended a busy month with Halloween
festivities taking place and many ongoing activities
including volleyball, chess, Cross Country running and
more.
November will be no less busy. Our Living Our Faith
Ceremony will take place at the end of the month.
Progress Reports went home and of course, our ParentTeacher-Student Interview Evening will take place as
well.
We had our Remembrance Day ceremony on November
11. Many parents joined us. As Canadians, we paused
in memory of the thousands of men and women who
sacrificed their lives in military service. The poppy
symbolized our remembrance. Why the poppy?
The association between the poppy and war dates back
to the Napoleonic wars, when a writer saw a field of
poppies growing over the graves of fallen soldiers.
During the Battle of Ypres in 1915, Canadian Lt.-Col.
John McCrae was inspired to write the poem In Flanders
Fields.
The poem was a great inspiration in adopting the poppy
as the Flower of Remembrance in Canada, France, the
U.S., Britain and Commonwealth countries. The first
poppies were distributed in Canada in 1921. Today the
voluntary donations from the distribution of millions of
poppies is an important source of revenue for the Royal
Canadian Legion that goes toward helping exservicemen and women buy food, obtain shelter and
medical attention.
Recent tragedies in Ottawa and Quebec remind us that
our fallen protectors of our great country deserve our
respect and attention.
Canada is the greatest country in the world and that we
paid the price to make it that way.
Sincerely,
Mark Cassar, Principal

is Conscience
The education of the conscience is a

Principals’ Message
We must remember. If we do not, the
sacrifice of those one hundred
thousand Canadian lives will be
meaningless. They died for us, for their
homes, families and friends, for a
collection of traditions they cherished
and a future they believed in; they died for Canada. The
meaning of their sacrifice rests with our collective national
consciousness; our future is their monument.
These wars touched the lives of Canadians of all ages, all
races, and all social classes. Fathers, sons, daughters, and
sweethearts: they were killed in action, they were wounded,
and thousands who returned were forced to live the rest of
their lives with the physical and mental scars of war. The
people who stayed in Canada also served - in factories, in
voluntary service organizations, wherever they were
needed.
A Canadian soldier kneels at
the grave of fallen comrade in
the United Nations Cemetery,
Korea, April 1951. (National
Archives of Canada PA 128813)
Yet for many of us, war is a
phenomenon seen through the
lens of a television camera or a
journalist's account of fighting in
distant parts of the world. Our
closest physical and emotional
experience may be the discovery
of wartime memorabilia in a family attic. But even items such
as photographs, uniforms badges, medals, and diaries can
seem vague and unconnected to the life of their owner. For
those of us born during peacetime, all wars seem far
removed from our daily lives.
We often take for granted our Canadian values and
institutions, our freedom to participate in cultural and

political events, and
our right to live
under a government
of our choice. The
Canadians
who
went off to war in
distant lands went
in the belief that the
values and beliefs
enjoyed
by
Canadians
were
being threatened.
They truly believed that "Without freedom there can be no
ensuring peace and without peace no enduring freedom."2
By remembering their service and their sacrifice, we
recognize the tradition of freedom these men and women
fought to preserve. They believed that their actions in the
present would make a significant difference for the future,
but it is up to us to ensure that their dream of peace is
realized. On Remembrance Day, we acknowledge the
courage and sacrifice of those who served their country and
acknowledge our responsibility to work for the peace they
fought hard to achieve.
During times of war, individual acts of heroism occur
frequently; only a few are ever recorded and receive official
recognition. By remembering all who have served, we
recognize their willingly-endured hardships and fears, taken
upon themselves so that we could live in peace.
REMEMBRANCE DAY
For those who were killed in battle,
For those who gave up their lives to save others,
For those who fought because they were forced to,
For those who died standing up for a just cause,
For those who tried to make peace,
For those who prayed when
others had little time to pray,
For all humanity.
May God hold them in peace
May love flow over the Earth and cleanse us all,
this Remembrance Day for always.

Luke 2:13-14
“And suddenly there appeared with the angel a multitude
of the heavenly host praising God and saying, "Glory to
God in the highest, And on earth peace among men with
whom He is pleased.”
As we enter the Christmas season, let us remember the true
meaning of Christmas. Extend peace and kindness to those
around us. We often get caught-up in the hustle of the
Christmas season that we can forget to take a moment to
ourselves, and with our loved ones.
Alexander Pope said, “To err is human, to forgive, divine”.
Forgiving each other will help extend peace and calmness.
Forgiveness of an action may help a stressed parent find
peace in their day to then extend peace to another.
Please extend courtesy and patience in the Kiss N Ride, as
well on Heatherdale Drive. Drive cautiously – extend peace
by allowing the car in front to merge and leave. Help
broaden peace by parking legally Heatherdale Drive so the
bus can pass safely and timely. These are things we can
do to help each other and help our children stay safe.
In celebration of Christmas, we will be hosting a POTLUCK
DINNER on Thursday, December 4, 2014. Please come
and share a dish of your choice. To sign up, please send
an email to GuardianAngelsCSC@gmail.com or send a
note via your child’s agenda/mail baggie to our attention.

School Fundraiser
We kicked off our fall fundraising on
September 18th. It ran for four
weeks. These fundraising events
generate funds that support
initiatives within the school. Monies
raised through fundraising help
provide Smartboards for classrooms, new gym
equipment, math resources for the classroom, guest
artists and subsidize the costs of trips. Thank you for
showing your support by selling chocolates. We raised
approximately $20 000 to use towards our goals.
We have placed a renewed effort to bring curriculum up
to speed and focus on student achievement. Our goal in
this regard is to bring Guardian Angels’ EQAO scores up
and to promote students as learners in a global
community. We have fundraised to support technology in
the classrooms, 21st Century learning environment and
to support extracurricular activities.

Advent
We are planning for the season of Advent that leads
to Christmas and the beginning of a new liturgical
year. As a community, we will come together on
December 8th to celebrate Advent.
The word Advent means "coming" or "arrival." The
focus of the entire season is the celebration of the
birth of Jesus Christ in his First Advent, and the
anticipation of the return of Christ the King in his
Second Advent. Advent is far more than simply
marking a 2,000-year-old event in history. It is
celebrating a truth about God, the revelation of God
in Christ whereby all of creation might be reconciled
to God. Prayers and our attendance and
participation at Mass enrich our waiting for Jesus.
May God bless you all in this Holy season.
December will be a busy month with our preparations

May the Christmas Holidays be a time to rest and
renewal of one’s faith in our God.
At a time of reflection, remembrance, and
anticipation, we thank you for your support and
consideration. Reflect in your minds and hearts with
this …” Let there be peace on Earth, and let it begin
with me”.
Primary Christmas Concert

will make its way down to the ACC
ahead of time and complete a sound check on the court as
both teams warm up. The choir will be cheered on by over
250 supporters. Thank you to our choir leaders, Mrs. Lyons,
Ms. Schmaltz, Mrs. Gibson Power and Mr. Resendes for
their efforts with the choir. A video of the choir will be made
available shortly after the game. There are still a few tickets

Confessions for Grades 2-8 Students
To help our students prepare for the
coming of the Advent season,
Father Jan will be at Guardian
Angels school on Thursday,
December 11th, to hear confession
for all baptized students from grades
3-8. The classroom teacher will help
students prepare for the sacrament by reviewing what the
children should say when they enter the confessional, by
helping reflect on the weaknesses, and challenges we all
face. Please note that only students who are baptized
Catholic and have received the sacrament of Reconciliation
will participate in this celebration.
classroom to examine more
closely with magnifying glasses at
our science centre. We sorted the
leaves by shape, colour and size.
The leaves were also used to
make a leaf print art activity. We
used books and the internet to
learn more about leaves and to find
out why they change colour in the Fall.
To start our pumpkin inquiry, a variety of pumpkins were
brought into the classroom for students to examine.
Through the student investigations of the pumpkins a list of
questions about pumpkins was co-created. We used books
and the internet to help us find the answers to these
questions. We also measured our pumpkins with snap
cubes to find out how tall our pumpkins were and estimated
how many seeds we scooped out of our large pumpkin.
Once all of the students had an opportunity to guess the
number of seeds that were in our pumpkin we counted them
and found out that there were 239 seeds in our pumpkin.
Room 101 is pleased to have Miss S. Singh, a co-op student
from St. Roch Catholic Secondary School in our classroom
every afternoon. She will be with us until the end of January.
Our Grade One Classes
Mrs. Eng, Mrs. Fournier and Mrs.
Stoker are proud of their Grade 1
students. The Grade 1s have truly
demonstrated a love of literature. In
Reading, the children have been
working hard trying to reach the 20minute Read To Self goal.
They continue to work on stamina and
reading the whole time. During
Writer's Workshop the students are motivated writing
personal narratives about their daily lives. They love to
share their stories.
During the 3-Part Math Lesson, the children are learning
partnering skills and to communicate their learning. They
seem to really be enjoying their new unit on patterning.
They are using a variety of manipulatives to create colour,
shape, size, thickness and orientation patterns. It will be
interesting to see their creativity in action patterns.
During Religion and Family Life, the focus has been on
love and respect for self and others. They are learning
that we all belong to God's family.
Mrs. Sepe’s Kindergarten Class
Miss Schmalz’s
The beginning of the school year has been very busy. The
students were engaged in their own learning through our
Fall leaf inquiry and our pumpkin inquiry. As part of our Fall
leaf inquiry, we went on a nature walk around the school to
look at all of the beautiful leaves on the trees. We then
collected a variety of leaves and brought them into the
In Miss Schmalz's class we have been working on lots of
things. We have been learning about patterns in math. We
have been using t-charts, number lines, we have been
finding out what the pattern is growing by each time and
which numbers to add. We built things out of blocks that
grew by a certain number of blocks each time. Then we

made a t-chart to show how the number of blocks grew. We
found rules for our patterns, for example start at 3, add 3
each time. We can extend and continue patterns. We found
a shortcut to find out how many blocks there would be for 9
pictures using multiplication.
We just started our new math unit on Data Management,
and we are going to learn about different kinds of graphs
and how to organize data. We can use a tally chart to keep
track of our data. We are learning that a graph has a title,
axis, labels, scale.
Every week we learn new words of the week. We learn
patterns in the words to help us spell other words. We have
been learning how to organize our ideas before we start
writing by making a web. We can make webs on the
computer using the SMART Ideas program. We can use
WordQ to help us spell words when we are typing. We
talked about beginning, middle, and end of a book we read,
and then put it together to write a book review. We added
in a picture of our book or character at the end.

the
classroom has been designed by the students in a fashion

well with the new technology of tablets, which allows them
to try innovative studies in their self-designed class. Mr.

forward to seeing where we can go from here to move
themselves into greater learning in future fashion!
Madame Gunia’s Classes (Grades 4-8)
Bonjour! I am very enthusiastic to
share with you the progress our
students have made over the last few
months in French. In our junior
classes (Grades 4-6), students have
been exploring French vocabulary,
expressions and texts through the
“AIM” (Accelerative Integrated Methodology) Program.
Junior students have been learning gestures through,
songs, drama, games and partner-based activities.

Gestures are used to introduce and reinforce vocabulary
through visual and kinesthetic props, helping students to
soak up the language in a fun and meaningful way. The
students are thriving and loving the program. With all the
laughs, smiles and loud excitement all period, it's hard to
misjudge that they are happy learners!
In our Intermediate division classes, (Grades 7 & 8)
Students are familiarizing themselves with the “On Y Va”
program. Lessons are interactive and aimed to help
students use French in an authentic manner. Students
are encouraged to continue their language learning at
home by reviewing learned vocabulary and grammar
conventions and using online resources to help them
with pronunciation.
All students from grades 4-8 can access resources
related to their learning on Madame Gunia’s website.

During these last two months, our student council have
been busy planning events for our students under the
direction of our teacher supervisors (Mrs. Gallant, Mr.

put together:
 A Thanksgiving Food Drive – one of our best yet. We
had so much food donated. Thanks to all those
families who donated food this year.
 Pumpkin decorating display – each class received a
pumpkin to carve or decorate. Check out our school’s
Twitter page for pictures.
 The Terry Fox run pep rally & video - Our student
council showed others how we can all be like Terry.
 In addition, a very successful Halloween dance for all
to enjoy.
Our student council has lots more to plan. We are
bringing back, by popular demand, Christmas Cookie

initiatives. Stay tuned for Spirit Days and other activities
to be announced as they happen. The student council is
thrilled to make this 2014/2015 school year successful,
productive, and most of all memorable!
Mrs. Petrusa’s Grade Two Class
We are writing this letter to let all
of you know what fun things we
are learning about this month. We
are learning to retell stories. We
are learning to write our own
“small moment” stories. In math,
we are learning how to represent
numbers and count in efficient ways. We are enjoying using
different tools (e.g. money, ten frames, hundreds charts,
etc.) to show our work. We are also learning about the
Virtue of Conscience and how to make good choices.
In December, we are going on a field trip to the Kortright
Centre to learn about traditions from long ago. We are
excited to go because it is an outdoor field trip and we hope
to have a fun day.
We had an amazing time at the Halloween dance. We love
to be able to go to the office and show Mr. Cassar and Mrs.
Thompson all the good things we do in class. Thank you for
making us feel good inside when we come to show you our
work and you tell us how awesome we are!
Sincerely, The Grade 2 students in Mrs. Petrusa’s class.
Mrs. Gibson Power’s Grade 8s
This month in Math, we have been
learning about Data Management.
We have been using the three-part
Math lesson to explore different ways
of organizing and showing data. We
have been conducting experiments,
graphing our results, and explaining
our findings using appropriate vocabulary.
In Science, we have been learning about the cells of both
plants and animals. We have conducted several fun
experiments, and have looked at different cells and
organisms under a microscope. We found out what it felt
like to be an amoeba when we had “amoeba races” during
daily physical activity. We also made some cool cell
models, and learned how a cell is like a city.
In History, we are using our inquiry skills to learn about our
country’s past. We have been concentrating on the time
around Confederation, and have been exploring the
question “Is historical change always positive?”
The novel The Maze Runner by James Dashner, has been
our focus in Language so far this year. We read the novel
as a class, and have been completing challenges to show

Twitter: @GAngelsschool
our understanding of the book. We
have been creating maps, survival
guides, board games and trading cards
that reflect the themes of the novel. To
conclude our novel study, we went to
see the movie, and compared it to the
book. The movie was fabulous, but the
book was better!
Some more fun things we have taken part in the last month
or so have been:
Freedom Day-- we went to Yonge Dundas Square to
celebrate the freedoms we have here in Canada and to
make ourselves aware that freedom should never be taken
for granted.
The Brampton A’s visit-- they came to talk about respect and
following our dreams and goals. We had fun shooting
basketballs and cheering on our teachers.
The Halloween Dance—the best was when the whole
Intermediate Division got on the dance floor and danced
together. It was also fun seeing everyone from the
Kindergartens to the teachers dressed up in costumes.

Forest of Reading
The Forest of Reading titles have been announced. The
students are very excited about the various reading
programs, which are run through the school library: Blue
Spruce (grades 1, 2 and 3); Silver Birch Express (grades 3
and 4); Silver Birch- Fiction and Non Fiction (grades 5 and
6); and the Red Maple (grades 7 and 8). All students in
Grades 1, 2 and 3 will be participating in the Blue Spruce
program through visits to the school library. The Silver Birch
and Red Maple programs are run as a reading program
starting in January. For more information about Forest of
Reading visit www.accessola.com and search for the
Forest of Reading section to view this year’s nominated
titles.
Wikis for Inquiry and Reading Clubs
Many of the students will be talking
about their Class wiki and/or Forest of
Reading wiki. You ask… what is a wiki?
A wiki is: “A Web site developed
collaboratively by a community of
users, allowing any user to add and edit
content.” Mrs. McCannel, the Teacher Librarian, has been
introducing the concept of wikis to the teachers and the
students.
We started exploring wikis with the Forest of Reading wikis
that students use to post comments and respond to other
student’s about the books that they were reading. Some
class wikis have been developed to support Inquiry units for
the Social Studies curriculum. The wikis are monitored by
Website: WWW.DPCDSB.ORG/GANGL
the Teacher Librarian and/or the classroom teacher and are
password protected. Only individuals invited into the wiki are
allowed to participate and the students have been taught
how to be responsible wiki users.
The students have really excelled in their use of wikis and it
has been exciting to see this online technology excite our
learners. What a wonderful way to merge technology with
inquiry learning.
Please return all overdue library books so that other
students may enjoy them.
School Security Protocol
We have taken proactive measures to
secure the safety of staff and students
by locking the front door. Visitors may
gain entrance by pressing a buzzer
mounted on the wall, beside the door.
The buzzer activates a 2-way speaker
and camera system. The Office will then be able to tell who
is at the door through a TV monitor and thus, regulate visitor
access to the school.
Our Choir
The choir has been singing their way
into the hearts of many this year. We
have the amazing opportunity to sing
the National Anthems at a Raptors
game on December 12, 2014.
Although we are only able to take 25
choir members to sing at the Raptors
game, the entire choir has been
invited to spread Christmas joy and sing at Fortinos on
December 10th at 10:30. Parents are welcome to attend this
exciting musical event. Do not forget all are welcome to enjoy
the choir’s singing at the Christmas concert on December 17
and 18, 2014.

Bussing for 2014—2015
The board has a system to determine
eligibility using a GPS software
system. We request that you visit the
website, http://businfo.stopr.ca. Once
on the site, you will have to change the
school year to 2014-2015 and then
enter your address, grade level of your
child and School Board, and it will inform you if your child is
eligible for bussing for 2014-2015.
Your child may be eligible for transportation to and from
school if you live beyond the following distances:
JK /SK/Gr. 1: .................. 1.0 km
Grades 2 to 4: ................ 1.6 km
Grades 5 to 8: ................ 2.0 km
For eligible students, bus pick up and drop off times are
available using your OEN number (this is on your child’s
report card every year). Should you have any questions
please do not hesitate to contact the Transportation
Department directly. (1-800-668-1140 or 905-890-6000)
As per board policy, any courtesy seats were granted in
October 2014. Parents are asked to write a letter to the
Principal/Vice Principal to request an empty seat.
Preferences will be given to students from Grades 1 – 4,
those students with extenuating circumstances and those
living furthest away. PLEASE NOTE THAT BUS #1 IS
CURRENTLY FULL.
Telephone Calls to the School
Each day our office receives numerous
phone calls from parents with messages
for their children. With the lines tied up,
these calls are often left as voicemail. We
ask that you please ensure that
arrangements are made the night before
and children know what they are to do
after school. We encourage parents to send lunches, notes
and messages in the morning with their child(ren) in an effort
to avoid interruptions. We understand that emergencies do
happen and we will do our best to assist in these situations.
Thank you for your cooperation.

Child Illnesses
Please keep your child at home if he/she is
sick. We discourage children who have a
fever, are coughing, vomiting, or have a
runny nose, from coming to school. They
will recover from their illness much quicker
if they are resting at home.

BRACELET.
Students with birthdays have
their names called during the morning announcements as
well.
Nut Allergy Awareness Policy
Please be reminded that no nut products
are allowed in school. We have a number
of staff and students who have
potentially fatal anaphylactic sensitivities
to nut products. Please do not send
peanuts, other nuts, Nutella or any other nut products.
Thank you.
Administration of Medication
We will be sending home REACT forms for
parents to fill out in the event that your child
has a medical concern. The form requires
information on the medical issue, and a
picture of the child. Parents are responsible
for ensuring that all medication and forms are updated
annually.
If your child requires medication, please have all pertinent
forms completed and returned with the medication to the
office as soon as possible. A reminder that children are not
allowed to keep ANY medication on their persons, in their
desk, backpack or anywhere in their classroom, unless
ordered by their doctor. In such case, documentation is
necessary. All dispensing and storage of ANY medication
must occur in the Office.

School Bus Safety Rules
The conduct of individual students on the
bus directly affects the safety of all the
students on the bus. The driver’s attention
needs to be on the road. We are
requesting that all parents/guardians reinforce the School
Bus Rules with their child(ren). All Students Should:














Be at the bus stop 5-10 minutes prior to their stop time.
Never play close to the road.
Be ready to board the bus by waiting in an orderly line.
Board the bus in single file, use the handrail and sit
down in their seat as quickly as possible.
Listen to the bus driver.
Always remain seated while the bus is moving.
Do not throw anything out of the window.
Keep the aisles clear of objects (backpacks, lunches, etc.).
Do not shout or cause any other unnecessary noises.
Never put any part of your body out an open window.
Be sure to look all ways before crossing the road.
Do not damage the bus in any way.
Do not throw garbage on the floor.
Do not consume any food or drink on the bus.
Bus privileges can be revoked. Thank you for your support in
ensuring that students journey safely on the bus. Drivers can
report students to the school for inappropriate behaviour.
Attendance
Please call to register an absence (905) 595-0909, press 1
for the attendance. You can call 24hrs. An answering
machine is available to take information. Please provide
your child’s name, grade, teacher’s name and reason for
absence. If an absence is not reported, our policy is to call
home to verify student absenteeism. A parent or guardian
must sign out students who leave early. A reminder to
parents and students that an expectation set out from the
beginning of the year clearly indicated that all students must
arrive to school on time.
Dropping off Lunches
Lunches should
be dropped off
between 12:00 PM
and 12:30 PM.
Parents will label
the lunch with the student and teacher’s name. Parents can
simply place their child’s lunch in the appropriate class
basket. A class runner will deliver the lunches to the
classrooms. Student helpers can earn volunteer hours
delivering the lunches.
Website: WWW.DPCDSB.ORG/GANGL
Note that priority will be given to dealing with office and
student needs not answering the new front doorbell, so
dropping off lunches after 12:30 PM may delay your entry.
Kiss & Ride Drop Off and Pick Up
It is important when you are dropping off
your child in the morning that you enter the
Kiss and Ride lane and not the drive
through lane and proceed to end of the
lane before allowing your child to get
out of the car. Students must exit from the
right hand side of the car (closest to the
school) and parents should remain in the
car. Parents may then enter the “drive thru”
lane only to exit the parking lot.
Please do NOT leave your car. If you need to come into
the school, you must park. These rules are enforced and
you could be fined if not abiding by Brampton’s By-laws.
If walking your child to school in the morning or picking them
up at the end of the day, parents are asked to remain either
behind the black fence by the parking lot, on the path
closest to the school, or on the perimeter of the school
pavement. This is for your child’s safety, as teachers on
duty cannot distinguish parents from “strangers” in the yard
with such a large school. NOTE: parents are responsible for
arranging to pick up their child on time at the end of the day.
Students from grade 2 to 8 are released at their exit door.
Kindergarten and Gr 1 students ONLY are released from
the Kindergarten fenced yard. Those parents must pull
up to the Kiss and Ride curb and their child will come
to them. A teacher will be on duty to assist.
3. Consider not entering the Kiss and Ride…drop your kids
off by the sidewalk and they can walk the remaining few
feet, allowing you to drive away.
4. Carpool…fewer cars saves gas, is faster and helps the
environment.
5. Qualified children can take the school bus.
6. If you must drive, arrive before 9 AM and avoid the rush.
7. Do not get out of your car. That will just make things
much slower and frustrate the drivers behind you.
8. Wait your turn to get to the Kiss and Ride curb and your
child will come to you.
9. Finally – be patient, please. THANK YOU!
Brampton A’s Assembly on Respect
We were lucky to have members of the Brampton A’s
Basketball team visit our school on
November 5th. The players spoke to
the kids about perseverance and
about respecting our school, each
other and ourselves. The players put
on a clinic shooting three point shots
and they even had teachers and students get up to be a part
of the fun!
