GEORGES VANIER SCHOOL Weekly Update Safe Arrival Program: Please remember to phone in your child’s absence: 905-792-2251. Easter commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is the most important Christian festival, and the one celebrated with the greatest joy. Without Easter there would be no Christianity. Without Jesus' suffering, his execution and subsequent resurrection there would be no Christianity, for however terrible the suffering was, it was part of God's plan for the salvation of humankind. Easter Prayer for Children Jesus, You have overcome death and conquered every fear I could imagine. Help me to live each day remembering that You are alive, that You are bigger than anything or any situation and that your power is real. Jesus, you’re my hero and I’m walking with you always. Amen. Sacramental Dates Grade 2 First Communion (in the Church) Sunday, May 25 Grade 8 Confirmation (in the Church) Thursday, May 15 This month in sports and extracurricular activities: Catholic schools are Catholic communities. Catholic schools are faith communities. We – parents, students, teachers, administrative and support staff – walk and grow together in the faith which we received at our Baptism. And it is the ‘together’ that we grow. And as we learn from nature, growth relies on sun and water and nutrition. Otherwise, it may fade away and even die. Our growth is primarily a relationship with God, who at our Baptism, called us by name. But the response of each of us to that growth is both personal and communal. We grow in our faith in the nurturing atmosphere of our Catholic community be that of our local parish, our home, or our Catholic school community. If at the end of the day your child does not exit the building please do not leave your car in the Kiss ‘N Ride lane to investigate. Park the car and we are happy to assist you in the office. We remind students of the importance of following traffic safety rules. Students are reminded that bicycles, scooters, skateboards or rollerblades must be walked on to the school grounds. All bicycles and scooters should be chained and locked. Unfortunately, even chained bicycles can be quickly removed by determined thieves. It is suggested that expensive or hard to replace bicycles remain at home as the school cannot be responsible for stolen or damaged bicycles. Also a reminder to all students that the law requires that all children wear proper bicycle helmets. Skateboards and roller blades are safely stored in the classroom and are not to be used at recess or lunch time in the school yard. RAZ KIDS is up and running for grade JK to 5 students. We thank the School Council once more for bringing this great reading tool to our school community. WELL DONE VIKINGS! A REMINDER: The school day begins at 9:00 a.m. Please be mindful that your child should be at school prior to the bell so that she/he can follow the class routines for entry into the school. When your child is late for school, he/she will be missing teacher instruction and morning routines that can disrupt their learning. The school day ends at 3:30. We would ask that you refrain from picking up or signing out your child prior to the bell, unless it is for an appointment. JK/SK students will be dismissed from the kindergarten yard. Please, do not enter the school to pick up your JK/Sk child. Teachers will be busy dismissing children from the JK/Sk school yard exit. This is the area where your child should be picked up after the school day. All other students are dismissed at the back of the school. Thank you for your assistance. Issue #1 April 27, 2014 Hi there! My name is Naomi Benedict, and I am the Minister of Communication for Georges Vanier Student Parliament. This is my first time writing for the newsletter and I am so excited to see how it turns out! I will be reporting on the intermediate classes. The intermediate students are working on the science fair, which is coming up soon, in May. They are all working hard and making the most of their time. Some of the projects include plant life, electricity, and other interesting experiments. The students have neat ideas, and most of the experiments will be fun to do. But the students aren't doing this just for fun. The science fair will be a major part of their science mark. If it flops, their grades do too. This project will probably be the biggest one they have encountered so far! But once the fair rolls around, they will all surely have an amazing project that will catch the attention of many. And, how could I forget the prizes! There is a trophy to the top 3 groups that do best - 1st place, 2nd place, and 3rd place winners. The tension builds up greater and greater as the date draws closer- who will win the glory of first place? It's sort of like Masterchef, if you think about it- we're all competing for a prize, and we need to come up with something that will wow the judges. We have a limited time to do so, and if we fail we will be placed under the others. What a resemblance-who knew that teachers could be preparing us for a cooking competition? Anyway, thanks for reading my column. I hope you enjoyed it! Make sure to look out for me and my fellow schoolmates in the next "Student Voice" column, or the next episode of "Masterchef Kids" whichever comes first! Thank you! -Naomi Benedict Minister of communication More ‘student voice’ to come in our next weekly bulletin. Stay tuned….
