Department of Mathematics St. Edmund Campion Secondary School Course Code: MAT2L1 Course Name: Mathematics Level: Grade 10, Locally Developed This course provides students who have experienced significant difficulties in previous Mathematics courses an opportunity to obtain sufficient background and skill development to prepare them for Grade 11 and 12 Workplace Preparation courses. Whenever possible, ideas will be presented in a real-life context, providing students with the opportunity to explore, organize, interpret, and use mathematical models to solve problems. Technology and manipulative materials will be used wherever appropriate. Assessment and evaluation will be done using a wide variety of strategies. Overall Course Expectations: Developing & Consolidating Money Sense • • • • interpret, write, and round decimal numbers with understanding in everyday money situations; solve problems involving money, drawn from everyday situations; communicate information about money concepts; use literacy skills to obtain and communicate information about money sense; Developing & Consolidating Concepts in Measurement • estimate and measure length, capacity, and mass, in order to consolidate understanding of the metric system; • estimate and measure length, using the imperial system; • solve problems, carry out investigations, estimate and measure, using metric units, to consolidate understanding of perimeter, area and volume; • communicate information about measurement concepts; • use literacy skills to obtain and communicate information about measurement concepts; Developing & Consolidating Concepts in Proportional Reasoning • determine relationships among fractions, percentages, ratios, and rates by constructing diagrams, building models, and estimating measurements; • solve problems drawn from everyday situations involving percent, ratio, rate, and fractions; • communicate information about proportional reasoning • use literacy skills (reading, writing, listening, and speaking) to obtain and communicate information about proportional reasoning. Efforts will be made to meet the individual learning needs of students to promote student success with respect to meeting these expectations. Parent’s/Guardian’s Signature: _________________________ Date: _______________ Course Outline: Resources: The course will use a variety of resources. The primary textbook Math Essentials will be distributed to students during the first week of the course. The text and all other resources assigned to each student are the responsibility of the student. Any damage incurred will result in payment for replacement. Replacement cost for the text is $50.00. (all timelines are approximate) Unit 1: Working with Money Unit 2: Extending Money Concepts Unit 3: Metric Measurement Unit 4: Imperial Measurement Unit 5: Circles Unit 6: Circles and Angles Summative Evaluation 12 days 10 days 9 days 10 days 7 days 7 days 10 days Summative Assessment will be administered towards the end of the course and may include culminating activities and/or a final examination. Evaluation Policies 1. Student marks will be determined by evaluating process & product according to 4 categories (see below) & 4 levels of the Achievement Chart as found in the Ministry Policy document for Mathematics. Evaluation Structure: Knowledge/Understanding Application Communication Thinking/Inquiry 30% 30% 20% 20% Term work = 70% of the final mark. Summative work = 30% of the final mark. 2. Feedback will also be provided for student learning skills. Working independently, teamwork, organization, work habits/homework, and initiative are assessed apart from student achievement in the four categories outlined above and will conform to the coding: E – Excellent G – Good S – Satisfactory N - Needs Improvement 3. Assignments submitted after the due date established by the teacher will receive a penalty in accord with our school evaluation policy as outlined in the agenda. No assignment will be accepted once a teacher has returned marked assignments. Chronic lateness indicates poor organization skills and will result in parental contact and be reported in the learning skills section of the report card. 4. Should a student miss an evaluation due to a legitimate absence, a note shall be provided to the teacher the day of the student’s return to class stating the reason for absence and the parent/guardian’s awareness that the student has missed an evaluation. Makeup will be at the teacher’s discretion. Should such documentation not be provided, a mark of zero will be assigned. May God bless your efforts this semester!
