MAT2L OUTLINE Grade 10 Essential Math College Heights Secondary School OVERALL EXPECTATIONS EXTENDING MONEY SENSE By the end of this course, students will: • interpret, write, and round decimal numbers with understanding in everyday money situations; • solve problems involving money, drawn from everyday situations; • communicate information about money concepts; • use literacy skills (reading, writing, listening, and speaking) to obtain and communicate information about money sense. EXTENDING UNDERSTANDING OF MEASUREMENT By the end of this course, students will: • estimate and measure length, capacity, and mass, in order to consolidate understanding of the metric system; • estimate and measure length, using the imperial system; • solve problems, carry out investigations, estimate, and measure, using metric units, to consolidate understanding of perimeter, area, and volume; • communicate information about measurement concepts; • use literacy skills (reading, writing, listening, and speaking) to obtain and communicate information about measurement concepts. EXTENDING UNDERSTANDING OF PROPORTIONAL REASONING • determine relationships among fractions, percentages, ratios, and rates by constructing diagrams and estimating measurements; • solve problems drawn from everyday situations involving percent, ratio, rate, and fractions; • communicate information about proportional reasoning; • use literacy skills (reading, writing, listening, and speaking) to obtain and communicate information about proportional reasoning. Application - 30% Knowledge & Understanding - 30% Thinking, Inquiry, & Problem Solving - 20% Communication - 20% Accommodations: • Assignments and tests are designed with space, table, and grids provided for answers to be written (no lined paper required). • Assignment collaboration is encouraged provided written solutions are unique. • Assignments may be submitted at any time leading up to the final examination. • Tests may be completed during the lunch break of the next day if necessary. • Under certain conditions, assignments and tests may be written in an academic resource room with one-to-one teacher’s aid. Formative Assessment in the Unit: • On-going informal assessment is taking place throughout the class as students work on their assignments.
