Viola November news in grade two: Dear Parents, The month of October was very busy and the children have settled into their new routines. Our annual Halloween Dance-A-Thon was a huge success! Thank-you for your contributions and for supporting our school fundraiser. What We Are Learning About: Math: We have begun our unit on patterning. The students will learn to identify, describe, extend and create repeating patterns, growing patterns and shrinking patterns. They will also learn how to use a t-chart and column chart to extend growing patterns. At the end of the month, we will begin our unit on data management and graphing. Writing: The students have done a wonderful job in writing descriptive paragraphs and learning how to use graphic organizers as part of their writing process. They enjoyed creating a Halloween silhouette scene and describing their artwork, as well as, describing a monster and superhero. Students are encouraged to use their personal dictionaries and our class word wall to support them with their writing. Reading: The students have enjoyed their guided reading sessions with the teacher. I see one group of students per day; during this time we read a book together and work on reading/comprehension strategies together. The students then keep this book in their book bag for the week, along with other books at their reading level to read during independent reading time. Please continue encouraging your son/daughter to read the take home books which they may also write a response to. This month our writing focus will be writing letters. This will include writing a friendly, a letter to a veteran and a thank you letter to their grade one teachers. Science: The class is enjoying learning about animals and students have been researching an animal of their choice. Students will have the choice of a poster, book or flip book for their final project which they will present in the next few weeks. We will continue this unit, discussing the differences and similarities amongst their animals and how we can protect endangered animals. In Social Studies, we will begin learning about family traditions and celebrations amongst various cultural groups. These will include celebrations such as; Kwanzaa, Diwali, Ramadan, Hanukkah and Chinese New Year. Reminders: Please encourage your child to continue using Study ladder and Math Prodigy at home, which reinforces math and literacy skills. As the flu season is slowly approaching, please have your child dressed accordingly with a hat, gloves/mittens, scarf, boots, and warm coat. Remember to label all of your child’s clothing on the inside so that personal belongings can be returned accordingly if lost. Finally, you will find monthly newsletters on the school website; also review the St. Nicholas newsletter for important events taking place in the school. Please follow our school at st__nicholas15 on twitter! Thank you for your continued support, Mrs. DiNenno
