Educational Resource Worker In accordance with school operational requirements, and under the direction of the school Principal, Academic Resource Department Head, Academic Resource Teacher and the classroom teacher(s), provides assistance to students with special needs. Actual duties are assigned as determined by student needs as per Ministry of Education regulations and Board policies and procedures. Major Functions and Responsibilities • working under the direction of the Academic Resource Department Head, Academic Resource Teacher or the classroom teacher(s) and in conjunction with the Special Education team, assists in the identification, development and implementation of strategies and programs to address academic needs, work habits, social skills and life skills, including personal care/hygiene. This also includes appropriate health/medical response, where training is provided. • for students with special needs, assists the Academic Resource Department Head, Academic Resource Teacher or the classroom teacher(s) in preparing, developing, modifying and individualizing academic materials, resources and specialized equipment, such as assistive devices and specialized equipment that has been prescribed. • under the direction of Academic Resource Department Head, Academic Resource Teacher or the classroom teacher(s) and in cooperation with the Special Education team, facilitates the daily or regularly scheduled integration activities for students with special needs. • observes and monitors special needs student’s performance and reports observed physical, behavioural and academic progress to Academic Resource Department Head, Academic Resource Teacher or the classroom teacher(s) and appropriate Board personnel as directed. • consults with Academic Resource Department Head, Academic Resource Teacher or the classroom teacher(s) and/or support services staff in preparation for student daily planning. Attends evaluation meetings, Identification, Placement and Review Committee (IPRCs), case conferences, Individual Education Plan (IEPs) and parent interviews at the direction of the Academic Resource Department Head, Academic Resource Teacher or the classroom teacher(s) and the supervision of the Principal. • under the direction of Academic Resource Department Head, Academic Resource Teacher or the classroom teacher(s), informs the appropriate Special education Team members of day-to-day progress, concerns and needs of special needs students. Under the direction of the Academic Resource Department Head, 03 2005 2-3 Academic Resource Teacher or the classroom teacher(s), communicates these observations to parents/guardians as required. • maintains records and charts accomplishments of special needs student programs as assigned by the Academic Resource Department Head, Academic Resource Teacher or the classroom teacher(s) as required. • in accordance with Board policy and prescribed guidelines of the Principal, implements appropriate behaviour management programs with special needs students under the direction of Academic Resource Department Head, Academic Resource Teacher or the classroom teacher(s) and in consultation with the Special Education team and/or external agencies. • assists with special needs students’ mobility, including lifts, transfers and positioning to ensure student independence and inclusion, where training has been provided. • under Board guidelines, ie G.A.P.-Medical Protocol, and appropriate training by Community Care Access Centre of Peel (C.C.A.C.), administers prescribed medications and approved medical procedures as the designated staff. Maintains record of medication and individual health care needs, as designated by Academic Resource Department Head, Academic Resource Teacher or the classroom teacher(s) and under the supervision of the Principal. • administers qualified. • under the direction of a qualified health care professional and in accordance with prescribed programs, delivers physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy exercises for special needs students. • guides and assists special needs students in the development of skills in the areas of fine motor, gross motor, communication, academic, life, social and self-care skills, and behaviour management • maintains student personal care and hygiene within the daily program, including changing diapers, clothes, outerwear, swim and gym clothes as determined by the needs of the students. Feeds, washes and toilets students as required. • attends and participates in staff meetings and professional development activities • supervises student activity during yard duty • assumes responsibility for a teacher’s class in emergency situations under the supervision of the school Principal. 03 2005 first aid, C.P.R. and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention, where 2-3 • performs other related duties, as assigned by Academic Resource Department Head, Academic Resource Teacher or the classroom teacher(s) and under the supervision of the Principal. Notes The Special Education team may be comprised of, but not necessarily restricted to, the following staff: Principal; Vice-Principal; Academic Resource Department Head; Board wide Itinerant Teacher; Classroom Teacher; Special Education Resource Teacher (S.E.R.T.); Special Education Classroom Teacher; Child and Youth Worker; Educational Resource Worker; Psychologist; Social Worker; Speech and Language Pathologist; Speech/Vision/Hearing Specialists; and Department Heads.
