January 12th, 2014 - THE BAPTISM OF OUR LORD
This Sunday the Church celebrates the Baptism of the Lord (as narrated in the gospel), which marked the beginning of Jesus’
public ministry. It focuses on the revelation of Jesus to the nation by John the Baptist who revealed Him to those who
were awaiting the fulfillment of God’s promise. In many ways this is similar to last week’s celebration (Epiphany), when
Jesus was revealed to the representatives of the Gentile world. Jesus was baptized not to show His need for repentance but to show
the extent of ours. He chose to identify with us in our sinfulness. Later He would continue His identification with sinners by
sharing meals with them. The first reading tells us that a chosen servant of God will courageously serve God and help others to
salvation. The second reading reminds us that our own baptism gave us the power to do good.

Lectio Divina with Thomas Cardinal Collins
One Sunday evening each month, (Date coming up: Feb. 2,
2014), all are welcome to join Cardinal Collins, for Lectio Divina
at St. Michael's Cathedral. We begin with Vespers (Evening
Prayer) at 7 p.m., followed by Lectio Divina from 7:30 to 8:15
p.m. This year, Cardinal Collins will be reflecting on the Gospel
of Mark.
“Lectio Divina” [“divine, or sacred, reading”] is the name given
to a spiritual tradition among Christians over the last two
thousand years, in which they attentively and prayerfully read the
word of God. In Lectio Divina we seek not to master or grasp the
sacred text, but rather through it, prayerfully and silently, to come
into the presence of God. We seek to be humbly attentive to
God’s Holy Word, to savour it, and to let it enter into our heart as
much as our heads, so that it may transform us.
