February 9th, 2014 – FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Jesus uses in the gospel the metaphors of salt and light to describe the life of discipleship. What we do and how we do things
should be a source of light and meaning to others. Our actions should be visible signs of God’s presence in the world. A Christian,
therefore, has to be outstanding before everyone through his deeds and must enlighten all. In the first reading Isaiah tells the people
to be light to others by freeing the oppressed, sharing their bread with the hungry, and by sheltering the homeless. St. Paul reminds
us in the second reading that Christianity is not just a set of doctrines nor a theory on life but the person of Christ and the power of
the Spirit working our lives. We can draw the world to the love of God by making our actions active and presentable before people.
There is a strong spiritual link between the power of God and our good works because the loving and crucified Christ is the heart of
the Christian message.

Women’s Retreat
Lectio Divina with Thomas Cardinal Collins
March 7-9, 2014
Queen of Apostles Renewal Centre
1617 Blythe Road, Mississauga
One Sunday evening each month, from September to June, (Dates
coming up: Mar. 2), all are welcome to join Cardinal Collins, for
Lectio Divina at St. Michael's Cathedral. We begin with Vespers
(Evening Prayer) at 7 p.m., followed by Lectio Divina from 7:30
to 8:15 p.m. This year, Cardinal Collins will be reflecting on the
Gospel of Mark. “Lectio Divina” [“divine, or sacred, reading”] is
the name given to a spiritual tradition among Christians over the
last two thousand years, in which they attentively and prayerfully
read the word of God. In Lectio Divina we seek not to master or
grasp the sacred text, but rather through it, prayerfully and
silently, to come into the presence of God. We seek to be humbly
attentive to God’s Holy Word, to savour it, and to let it enter into
our heart as much as our heads, so that it may transform us.

Lent is an annual journey that often seems to pass quickly with
not enough time for spiritual growth. Why not consider coming
on retreat? It’s a wonderful way to prepare for the great feast of
Easter. This retreat will include talks given by the Queen of
Apostles Renewal Centre team. There is quiet time for personal
reflection, small group sharing, daily Mass, morning and evening
prayer, opportunity for the Sacrament of Reconciliation or
personal spiritual direction.
To register, please call 905-278-5229.
