January 19th, 2014 – SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Today’s readings challenges us to live and die like the Lamb of God. In both the first and second readings God calls individuals to service. In the first reading, from the Songs of the Suffering Servant in Isaiah, the aspects of the Lord’s life and mission are foreshadowed. Paul reminds the Corinthians in the second reading that “they are sanctified and called to be holy.” The gospel presents three themes: a) John’s witness to Jesus, b) Jesus’ epiphany and identification as Lamb of God, and c) the call to discipleship. Those who accept the call gradually accept the identity of the One who calls them. FEASTS THIS WEEK Monday Tuesday Wednesday Friday Saturday The Theology of the Body…….. February 7-9, 2014 at Queen of Apostles Renewal Centre, 1617 Blythe Road, Mississauga One Sunday evening each month, (Date coming up: Feb. 2, 2014), all are welcome to join Cardinal Collins, for Lectio Divina at St. Michael's Cathedral. We begin with Vespers (Evening Prayer) at 7 p.m., followed by Lectio Divina from 7:30 to 8:15 p.m. This year, Cardinal Collins will be reflecting on the Gospel of Mark. “Lectio Divina” [“divine, or sacred, reading”] is the name given to a spiritual tradition among Christians over the last two thousand years, in which they attentively and prayerfully read the word of God. In Lectio Divina we seek not to master or grasp the sacred text, but rather through it, prayerfully and silently, to come into the presence of God. We seek to be humbly attentive to God’s Holy Word, to savour it, and to let it enter into our heart as much as our heads, so that it may transform us. St. Francis de Sales outlined a way in which people could live God's love fully within their families, among their friends and in their places of work. Anyone seeking a relationship with God and practical ways of carrying out this devotion in daily life will find this book valuable.
