SHARING CORNER
Curriculum At A Glance
Monthly reading minutes for the boys and girls of
Room 403 continue to be impressive!! They deserve a
round of applause for their highest monthly total so far
of 13,220 minutes read in January. WAY TO GO!
Our classroom had two special celebrations
recently. First, we celebrated 100 Days of First Grade
on February 5th. Then, our festive Valentine's party
took place yesterday. A heartfelt “Thank you” goes out
to the parent volunteers who organized the craft,
activities, and goody bag. See my web site for new photos!
Literacy- Please take a moment to celebrate your child’s published
personal narrative that came home this week. The children are
putting effort into finding places in their stories to add detail that will
give the reader more information about the special time they chose
to write about. The students published their final personal
narratives this week. We continue to deepen our understanding of
the revising, editing, and publishing stages of the writing process.
We continue to explore nonfiction text. Ask your child to share
some text features that authors use and how those text features are
helpful. See my web site for some new pictures!
Science – The children have been very engaged in our new study
of rocks. The Big Idea question we are exploring is “What Can You
Observe About Rocks?” They have especially enjoyed learning
about fossils and discussing how they’re made and why scientists
study them. Next week we have a parent coming to share his rock
collection with us, and the children will have an opportunity to do
their own hands-on observations.
Math- The students have been exploring methods for adding three
single-digit numbers. They are encouraged to search for efficient
methods that informally use the associative property. They have
also been introduced to the “Make-Ten” strategy for addition.
When one addend is close to ten, they can use that to help find the
total. For example, in the equation 9+5, you can “steal” one from
the 5 to turn the 9 into a 10. Then you are left with 10+4. Adding to
ten is easier and more efficient. Try practicing at home with your
son or daughter. 
