JANUARY’S VIRTUE—SELF CONTROL

Dear God,

You have done such a marvelous job of creating us and the world around us.

Sometimes life is easy….sometimes life is challenging.

We know that you do not want us to suffer.

We know that you do not want us to make other people suffer.

We come to you now asking for the grace and strength to keep a sense of self-control.

We hope that by remaining calm in the middle of difficult situations, we can contribute to making our school a safer, more caring, and more inclusive community.

May your virtue of self-control help us to make decisions that serve the good of all your people – in our families, neighbourhoods and school community.

We ask this in the name of Jesus, your Son, who lived to show us your way.

Amen

Leagate when coming to and going home from school. The Crossing Guard is on duty at

8:15-8:45 am and 3:15-3:45 pm.

Thank you for your co-operation in looking out for the safety of all our students.

COLD WEATHER IS HERE!

In colder weather we often receive requests for students to remain indoors when students have a cold, flu, etc. If your child is not well enough to participate in all activities, including outdoor recess, you are asked to keep them home until they are well.

On extremely cold days, particularly when the wind chill factor lowers, we follow Board Policy by limiting the amount of time students spend outdoors. With the exception of these occasions, all children will participate in outdoor breaks. We ask parents to ensure that children wear hats, scarves, gloves, winter outerwear and boots. Where possible, please put identification on your child‟s belongings. Primary students are encouraged to have an extra dry shirt, pants and socks in their backpack in the event their clothing gets wet or soiled.

TRAFFIC SAFETY

Our school driveway is a matter of great concern in regards to the safety of our students. Therefore, we are reminding you again to use the Kiss

‘n’ Ride lane to drop off or pick up your child . You cannot park your vehicle in the

Kiss „n‟ Ride lane before school or at dismissal time during the day. When using the Kiss „n‟ Ride program to drop off or pick up students, please remember:

 We clear the Kiss „N Ride usually in 10 minutes. Please be patient we are all BUSY but

SAFETY comes first.

 The inside lane (closest to the school) is the only lane where cars can stop to drop off their children in the morning and pick up their children in the afternoon. Drivers should not be p a r k i n g a n d l e a v i n g t h e i r vehicle to walk to the school to pick up their child.

 The outside lane is a drive thru lane . This means that there should be no stopping and/or loading or unloading of students.

 If your child is not at the Kiss „N Ride area at dismissal time, please park in one of the spaces available in the parking lot or circle around once more.

 Students are not permitted to cross the parking lot unless accompanied by a parent or guardian.

 Please do not walk your children through the two Kiss „N Ride lanes. This is very unsafe and drivers may not see you in time. Take the time to walk around the Kiss „N Ride lanes.

 There is no parking in the driveway. This is a fire zone and blocks the flow of traffic.

FRONT DRIVEWAY

The front of the school is for BUSES ONLY.

CARS ARE NOT PERMITTED TO PARK,

DROP OFF or PICK UP students in the driveway or bus lane located at the front of the school.

Please refrain from blocking the driveway so that designated Board personnel can access it when needed.

PEDICULOSIS

A problem which seems to occur at least once a year in most schools is pediculosis or head lice. Head lice are parasites which have been common among human beings for centuries. They are not connected in any way with dirt, neglect, and so on. Anyone can be infested with them. Unfortunately, in recent years, they have become quite common throughout North America. In order to control these pests, we shall do the following and request your full cooperation.

If even one case is found in the school, we shall inform all parents of children in that class. We will be monitoring friends and classmates, however, we would ask that you also check your own children and if you find them to be infested, we ask you to let us know so that we can help you get the proper treatment and take the necessary precautionary measures. Even if cases are not reported from the school, it is a wise precaution to check your children periodically. If your children are infested, we will be asking you to keep them out of school until after they have been treated with the correct shampoo. If we all cooperate with these procedures, we may not entirely escape outbreaks, but we will be able to bring them under control quickly.

NEWS FROM ST. EDMUND CAMPION SECONDARY SCHOOL

St. Edmund Campion‟s students and staff extend warm wishes for a healthy and happy

2012. December was an exciting month for staff and students, as we came together to answer the call of charity by collecting over 6700 cans for our Annual Christmas Can

Drive. The cans were donated to organizations in our own Brampton community, including

The Knights Table, The Salvation Army and the St. Vincent De Paul Society (see image below)

As part of our Grade Nine Religion Program, students visit the

Knights Table, which is Peel Region‟s only soup kitchen and food bank. The retreat day is filled with prayer and service as the students are challenged to see Christ both in their actions and in the eyes of the clients who use Knights Table. The retreat at Knights Table is a memorable experience that puts faith into action and serves those most in need.

On December 12 th our Student Council hosted a “Winter Wonderland” themed Grade 9 dance. We had

150 students attend and enjoy an evening of great music and impromptu dance contests in which prizes were awarded to the best dancers. It was a huge success and will be held again next winter.

We continue to see the great successes our programs are offering students. We had over 100 Cooperative Education students showcase their work experiences in an interactive exhibit that allowed our school community to witness, support and applaud their achievements. This program was expanded to include the introduction of the

Dual Credit Program, which gives students interested in a career in trades or technology, the opportunity to earn college credits while completing their high school diplomas. This initiative is a collaborative effort with the Sheridan Institute and we are proud of the success our students have had thus far. Our Technology Department is also expanding its program to include Dufferin Peel‟s first ever Aviation Course for Grade

10 students, starting September 2012 (please see image for more details).

January promises to be another important month as students prepare for final exams and teachers get ready for the start of the second semester. Our Mathematics Department has been preparing for this year‟s Grade 9 EQAO Assessment and is confident that our students will again demonstrate the same success they had last year. The 2010 -

2011 school year saw 97% of our Grade 9 Academic Mathematics students achieve results of level 3 or above. We are incredibly proud of the efforts of our students and teachers.

Our Dramatic Arts students, as part of their Culminating Activity, are performing an issue play called "Body Body". It is a one act play that deals with the struggles young people experience with self-perception and self-esteem. On January 12 th the Harmony Movement at Campion had its graduation ceremony where 25students received a Diversity Leadership Certificate. These chosen students possess excellent leadership skills and demonstrate the core values of the community. At each meeting, students discuss ideas relating to stereotypes, disabilities, gender, race and religion and celebrate diversity in the school community.

The start of February brings the beginning of our Black History Month celebrations. This year we are featuring several guest speakers, a dramatic play entitled “Voice from the Past” and several student run initiatives including an open discussion panel about issues important to our young people. On February 13 th the “Boys to

Men Reading Program” begins and runs from 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. at St. Aidan Elementary School. Boys to Men members from Campion read to selected boys for the first half hour and participate in leadership/interactive games in the second half-hour. This portion of the Boys to Men program promotes leadership qualities for the older boys and allows the younger boys the experience of a relationship with a mentor.

Just a reminder to Grade Eight parents that we are still accepting registration for the 2012/2013 school year, please contact our Guidance Department if you have any questions. We look forward to sharing more of our school’s good news and all of our upcoming events. In addition, we encourage you to contact

St. Edmund Campion S.S. if you have any questions or would like to get involved in any of the events mentioned above; please feel free to call us at 905-846-7124 .

BALLROOM IS BACK!!!

During the months of November and December, the grade 6, 7 and 8 students at

St. Bonaventure were hitting the dance floor learning brand new ballroom routines. Students received between 5 to 8 dance lessons from Future Steps. At the end of their instruction, the students participated in a dance competition on December, 22, 2011. The many hours of practice and rehearsals were well worth it. Whether they were dancing Rhumba, Swing, Tango, Merengue or the Cha Cha, our students showed that they could dance, keep the beat and move their bodies just like the pros. All the students had a great time and should be proud of their amazing achievements in dance.
