News from the Library Information Centre at St. Michael Catholic S.S
Volume 1 - Issue 1
Dear St. Michael Community,
I’d like to take this opportunity to welcome you all to the St.
Michael Library Information Centre. We are very excited to have the
opportunity to work with each and every one of your children.
It is our goal to ensure that your children, our students, have
equal and fair access to all types of various resources to ensure that
they achieve both their personal and academic goals. We are
carrying the best in digital and print texts that are available.
We will also be offering many exciting programs throughout
the year- Creative Writing Club, Book Club, and etc- to make sure
that the idea of literacy is something that is a part of everything
that we do here. Literacy is more than just a test.
We also want to be transparent and make sure that we
communicate with the St. Michael community on a regular basis.
We will frequently update our page on the school website, and we
will distribute our monthly newsletter From the Shelf. We welcome
your feedback and input.
We are reinventing the school library, and building a first rate
learning community. I am honored to serve the St. Michael
community.

Creative Writing Club/Book Club
Over 45 students have joined either the Book Club
and/or the Creative Writing Club. We will meet on
a weekly basis and share our thoughts and insight
on various forms of literature and creative
expression.
Welcome Back to the Library
We are in the middle of organizing an event
to celebrate the grand opening of the library. We’ve
had many parents and people from the community
pass through. You’ve seen the walls, the computers
and the floors. Come and see the library the way it
was supposed to be seen! We have created a
vibrant environment where learning and social
engagement is thriving.
CLUB NEWS
Book Club
I’m pleased to announce that Markus Zusar’s The
Book Thief is our first selection for Book Club. I read the
book while I was in Spain this past summer and couldn’t
put it down (or seem to get up from my hammock).
The book is described as being, “…brilliantly
executed by Australian author, Markus Zusar.
Death narrates “just a small story, really.” It turns
out to be the story of “the book thief,” Liesel Meminger,
her foster family, neighborhood friends, a Jewish
amateur prizefighter in hiding, and a world gone mad
with a global war and the horrors of the Holocaust. The
Grim Reaper’s riveting tale goes far beyond “just a small
story”, and every page deserves to be read. (Amazon

Mr. Scarcelli has agreed to purchase the books for
the club. Thank you, Mr. Scarcelli.
BIBLIOtech
Our goal is to help students identify their learning styles and
build important information literacy skills. Technology is going to
help our students apply new information and experiences to their
existing knowledge, and assist them grow in their understanding of the
world.
We have started to work some new technological initiatives that
will also help develop their critical thinking skills.
One such program is Turnitin.com. This plagiarism prevention
program will be used to teach our kids how to think critically and to
help foster a community of academic and personal integrity.
We are also running a program that we will see our kids have
access to the Caledon Public Library databases. This will ensure that
your children have access to the best online resources available.
Over the next few months our e-resources will be looked at. We
want to ensure that the St. Michael community has access to the best
information available so that when they leave here they are prepared to
deal wheel and deal in the technological landscape.
PROFILE OF A LIBRARY USER
Name: Angelo Vivona
Grade:9
Favourite Subject(s): Math- even though I haven’t done it
yet.
Creative Writing Club
Favourite food- Lasagna and Sushi.
We had a wonderful turnout for our first meeting as creative writers. The students
are excited to explore various styles and genres of creative writing forms. When I
asked how many might be interested in a career in writing, 95 % put up their hands.
I didn’t know whether to applaud for them, or to weep for them. Our first writing
topic is: MAGIC.
We will be meeting every Wednesday after school in the library.
Favourite Book- PenDragon by D.J Machale.
I like that it is a series. Every book I read I can see like a film
in my mind.
Aneglo visits the library on a daily basis. He was the first student to take a book out from
the library and for this will always have a special place in my heart. So much so that I went out
and purchased a $25 gift card from Chapters for him.
