CUT/TORN PAPER STILL LIFE (SUMMER)
LESSON FOCUS:
This lesson focuses on creating a collaged still life from direct observation.
VOCABULARY:
Collage: A technique in which the artist glues materials such as paper, cloth, or found materials
to some type of ground.
Setup: Group of objects arranged as a subject for drawing.
Still life: A group of inanimate objects arranged to be painted or drawn; also, a painting or
drawing of such an arrangement.
PROCEDURE:







Set up a still life.
Do several sketches of different view points. Be sure to include at least five objects.
Once you have an interesting, well-balanced composition transfer it onto good backing
paper.
Using a variety of cut and/or torn paper, begin to build up the color and values of the still
life objects.
It will take several layers to achieve a finished surface.
The entire paper should be covered.
Make sure all your pieces are glued down (no pieces should fall off).
MATERIALS:





sketchbook
14"x 17" oak tag or cardboard
assorted papers
scissors, x-acto knive
glue, decoupage medium, modge podge, etc.
