Room 219 Update - Week of January 11, 2016 Dear Families, Here is what we are working on in our classroom: Math: Monday will be spent reviewing for Tuesday’s test on Topic 6, and on Wednesday we will begin Topic 7. In Topic 7 students will learn how to represent and interpret data. We will begin by work learning how to read and create picture graphs and bar graphs. Ask your child about the importance of symbols and scale when creating and reading picture graphs! Reading: This week our study of nonfiction texts will come to a close. We will spend the beginning of the week reading and analyzing narrative nonfiction texts on a variety of topics, followed by learning how to identify hybrid nonfiction texts. The week will end by celebrating all we have learned about nonfiction reading, and students will take the postassessment on Friday. Writing: As I predicted, students have already amazed me with their stellar persuasive speech-writing skills! I have loved seeing their style and voice come through in their writing. This week they will be pick a seed idea to take through the drafting, revising, and editing process. Students will also learn how to gather and organize evidence to support opinions, as well as how to prove something by showing it in their writing. Social Studies: We will transition back to a social studies unit all about public services. Students will learn about the importance of different public services in our community (such as public schools, firefighting, transportation, etc.), and we will even create a human bar graph to show the relative importance of the different public services. Ask your child which public service he/she thinks is the most important and why! Upcoming Events: 1/13 – Art Goes to School visits Room 219 1/18 – NO SCHOOL - MLK Day of Service 1/22 – January Scholastic book orders due (flyers will be sent home this week!) Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Thank you for your dedication to your child’s education! Sincerely, Kaylee Viscuso
