Room 219 Update - Week of January 4, 2016 Dear Families, **Thank you very much for the generous class gift that was given to me before the winter break! I can’t say enough about the families, students, and community here in Media, and you have all always made me feel welcome and appreciated. Also, thank you to all of the families that contributed food/drink, supplies, or time for our holiday party in December. We had a fun day! Here is what we are working on in our classroom: Math: We will continue our exploration of area, and focus on using multiplication and the distributive property to calculate area. Students will also learn how to find the area of irregularly shaped figures. Our review of Topic 6 will begin this Friday, and the test will be next Tuesday, January 12th. Reading: This week we have transitioned from expository nonfiction to narrative nonfiction. Students will start the week by looking at the organization of biographies, with the focus being on summarizing narrative nonfiction. We will analyze the similarities between the structure of many fiction texts and narrative nonfiction. Encourage your child to practice this skill at home by searching for biographies on KidBiz and asking him/her to summarize the text. Writing: Students have jumped right in to our next writing genre: persuasive writing! It is my favorite genre of writing to teach, and this is the time of year that I always see students’ writing start to flourish. This week our focus will be on learning ways to generate ideas for opinion writing, as well as considering the importance of our audience. Science: This week we will conclude our study of body systems by learning all about the respiratory system. A test on the body systems will be given on Friday, January 8th. You can help your child prepare for this test by reviewing items on the study guide that was sent home on Monday. We will also be reviewing in school on Wednesday and Thursday. Upcoming Events: 1/8 – Arts and Crafts Night – 6:00-8:00pm 1/18 – NO SCHOOL - MLK Day of Service Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Thank you for your dedication to your child’s education! Sincerely, Kaylee Viscuso
