Winter Storms
• Snow falls when humid air cools below
0°C.
• Heavy snowfalls can block roads, trapping
people in their homes.
• Extreme cold can damage crops and
cause water pipes to freeze and burst.
Blizzards
• Blowing snow with winds in excess of 35
mph.
• Visibilities less than .25 mile
• Last longer than 3 hours
Lake Effect Snow
• Buffalo and Rochester NY
– Snowiest cities in the US.
– 3meters of snow falls on average.
• Cold air from Canada travels over the lakes and
picks up water vapor and some heat from the
lakes.
• The air rises and cools on the other side of the
lake and produces snow.
Snow Storm Safety
• Try to find shelter from the wind.
• Cover exposed parts of your body and
stay dry.
• If in a car, driver should keep the engine
running only if the exhaust pipe is clear of
snow.
