POSITION DESCRIPTION TITLE: EXTENDED TITLE: FLSA STATUS: Athletic Coach Head Softball Coach Exempt CATEGORY: Professional GRADE: E JOB SUMMARY: Under indirect supervision of the Director of Athletics, the Head Softball Coach is responsible for creating and maintaining a successful Softball program for El Paso Community College. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: YEARLY PERCENT OF TIME 50% 1. Responsible for team management duties including recruitment, advertising, training, teaching and any other support activities. Develop and oversee annual orientation program for athletes. Monitor the academic success of student-athletes ensuring they meet the academic requirements set by both the NJCAA and EPCC’s athletic scholarship eligibility requirements. 2. Responsible for the administration of the sport’s budget, fund-raising, expense control, compliance, and purchase of uniforms, equipment, supplies, housing and year-round maintenance of the practice and game facilities. Develop and recommend annual budget for approval to Athletic Director. 15% 3. Develop and coordinate home games and schedule team travel for out of town trips; ensure that all events held in conjunction with the Athletic department are in compliance with NJCAA, UIL and EPCC rules, regulations, policies and procedures. 10% 4. Develop practice schedules and teach the fundamental skills and drills of the game of Softball. Teach precautions and procedures to help students prevent injuries. Ensure that medical authorization forms are on file and readily available. 10% 5. Develop a recruitment plan and maintain an appropriate system for tracking recruiting records. Ensure that all Softball players meet NJCAA eligibility requirements and prepare eligibility forms to be sent to the NJCAA, as appropriate. 5% 6. Participate in EPCC and NJCAA public relations activities including press, television, radio interviews, news conferences and speaking engagements. 5% 7. Other duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics. 5% REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: Director of Athletics SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: This position will have supervisory responsibilities over the assistant coaches and will be responsible for the student-athlete during travel to and from games. Effective: 9/1/12 Page 1 of 4 ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree. EXPERIENCE: Six (6) years related experience. SPECIAL SKILLS AND ABILITIES: 1. Skills/Abilities: This position requires advanced knowledge of the rules and regulations of the National Junior College Athletic Association. The ability to provide leadership and supervision to student athletes in a professional manner. Understand and comply with EPCC’s goals and objectives for recruitment of student-athletes. Possess the ability to communicate with diverse individuals with various levels of education in an objective and effective manner. Valid Texas driver’s license and eligible for insurability. 2. Equipment Used: Equipment related to the sport of Softball, personal computer, telephone, calculator, and other equipment associated with an office environment. 3. Software Used: A variety of word-processing, spreadsheet, database, e-mail, and presentation software. INTERPERSONAL SKILLS: This position requires the ability to work both day, evening and weekend hours including being able to travel with the team on road trips to games. This position requires the ability to read and interpret policies, procedures and instructions. Have the ability to communicate both orally and in writing. The Athletic Coach must demonstrate a cooperative attitude toward all other EPCC programs. WORKING CONDITIONS: The Coach performs work both outdoors and in a climate-controlled environment. There is minimal exposure to safety hazards. This position requires frequent travel.
