Dutch Level 4+

Prerequisite for entry

For students who have a good knowledge of the language, but are not proficient yet. For students who master the vocabulary and most grammatical concepts and tenses, or those who have completed Dutch Level 4 at UCL.

Term duration

10 x 2-hour classes.

Aims and Objectives

The aim of the course is to enable students to engage in more complex conversations.

Students should be able to communicate relatively fluently with Dutch natives in most situations. They should also be able to convey their opinions regarding current issues.

Main focus in level 4+ is on conversation and comprehension, even though some more complex grammatical issues will be addressed in this level.

Functions

Using the past tenses (present perfect & simple past)

Expressing opinions

Making comparisons

Talking about preferences and asking others about their preferences

Understanding new paper articles & tv spoken Dutch

Course Content: Main topics/themes to be covered

The abdication enthronement of King Willem-Alexander + analysis of newspaper articles

Renting/buying a house – The estate agent - Dutch architecture vs British architecture – Analysis poem ‘De stadsgenoot’ (Jan Elburg)

Television – Television programs – television as a mass medium – Television show

‘Wat als…?’ – Tv appropriate for children?

Style: character, housing, clothing, spare time, dining out, etc.

Linguistic Structures/ Phonetics

If needed, recap of rules of the pronunciation of spoken Dutch

Grammar

‘Wat’ as an exclamation

Continuous recap present perfect and simple past

Continuous recap word order + conjunctions

Use and meaning of ‘er’

Indirect questions (Subclauses with question words)

Structure: Verbs at the end of the subclause

Question words (! Prep+ wat → waar +prep!)
