UCL CENTRE FOR LANGUAGES & INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION Evening Courses Dutch Level 1 Prerequisite for entry For complete beginners or those who have had only very little contact with the language. Term duration 10 x 2-hour classes. Aims and Objectives The aim of the course is to enable students to function at a basic everyday survival level (basic vocabulary, grammar and phonetics). Students should be able to communicate in and understand Dutch on a number of practical everyday matters. Functions - Greetings, introducing yourself and others Talking about yourself Talking about the weather Buying everyday items Asking for and telling the time Asking and indicating ‘when’ Asking and identifying places in relation to other items Asking and answering yes and no questions Asking and telling what people are wearing Course Content: Main topics/themes to be covered - First contacts around nationality Numbers, days of the week The weather Travelling The time “At home” Colours and clothes Linguistic Structures/ Phonetics - Basic rules of the pronunciation of spoken Dutch UCL Language Centre Evening Courses 1 Grammar - Noun and gender: het words and de words Prepositions and adjectives Definite and indefinite articles Present tense of verbs Personal pronouns Numerals Subject, object and word order in Dutch Learning Resources Books: - Course book: Taal Vitaal – Nederlands voor beginners, Intertaal Grammar: Teach Yourself Dutch Grammar (Hodder Education) Lecturers handouts In addition there are a range of language learning materials for self-study in the Self-Access Centre.
