Currently, this course is being taught as SPA 34104 in two different sections, one targeting the SPA major and the other offered for non-majors. The instruction has to be adjusted to accommodate the different backgrounds of major and non-major students. This new course will retain the Speech and Language Development title and 34104 is being retitled. Learning Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to: Understand how the brain and environment contribute to the development of human speech and language. Understand theories of language development. Understand the typical development of speech and language including phonology, morphology, syntax, pragmatics and semantics. Analyze language samples to evaluate if a child's language is on track in terms of expected developmental milestones. Recognize characteristics that differentiate typical from atypical speech language development and develop a beginning understanding of intervention research related to atypical language development. In-class activities: Lecture, Videos, Clicker questions, Small group language sample analysis activities, Quizzes and Exams. Out-of-class activities: Videos, Review of scholarly literature, Reading textbook, Online quizzes and textbook resources.
