Proposal Summary
Explain the purpose for this proposal:
The purpose of this proposal is to revise the title for SPA 34104 Speech and Language Development to "Speech and
Language Acquisitions." Currently, this course is taught in two different sections, one targeting the SPA major and the other
offered for non-majors. The instruction has to be adjusted to accommodate the different backgrounds of major and nonmajor students. A new course is being established (SPA 34210) for non SPA majors (which will retain the Speech and
Language Development title); therefore, 34104 is being retitled and will better reflect the content necessary for SPA
students. The prerequisites are also being revised to restrict registration to the professional phase. Special Approval will no
longer be necessary, as SPA students take this course and non-SPA majors will take 34210. This will ease the registration
process, as students will not have to be individually permitted into the appropriate course section.
Explain how this proposal affects program requirements and students in your unit:
Program requirements will not change. The course reflects the needs of the SPA major.
Explain how this proposal affects courses, program requirements and student in other units:
Programs that currently require SPA 34104 will have to revise their program requirements to include the new course SPA
34210 Speech and Language Development. This new course better suits the needs of the non-SPA major.
Explain how this proposal affects enrollment and staffing:
No impact; course is currently taught in two sections. It will now be taught as two different courses.
