North Central Thames Foundation School (NCTFS) Individual Placement Description - Luton and Dunstable Hospital NHS Foundation Trust Placement The department Learning opportunities Location Supervisor(s) Expected supervised work during the placement F2 Obstetrics and Gynaecology Gynaecology has been an established specialty at the L&D since the hospital’s foundation in 1939. The department offers one of the most comprehensive Gynaecological services in the region. The Maternity team at L&D provides a comprehensive service to women in Luton, south Bedfordshire and parts of Hertfordshire and deliver over 5,000 babies. The overall educational objectives of the F2 year are to provide the trainee with the knowledge, skills and attitudes to be able to Learn effective history taking and examination specific to O & G Identify ,analyse and manage medical and surgical problems in women’s health Prescribe safely Keep an accurate and relevant medical record Manage time and clinical priorities effectively Developing communication/leadership/ team-working qualities to effectively relate to patients, relatives and colleagues Use evidence, guidelines and audit to benefit patient care Act in a professional manner at all times Cope with ethical and legal issues which occur during the management of patients in O&G Educate patients effectively Become life-long learners and teachers The F2 doctor will be responsible for such other specific clinical duties as allocated by consultants including performing other duties in occasional emergencies This placement gives exposure to safe prescribing issues for pregnancy and breastfeeding mums. Luton & Dunstable Hospital – Women’s Health Unit Mr. Shyam Das and Miss Samita Das Antenatal wards: Review women in ward rounds Prescribing medications/TTAs Manage medical problems appropriate to level of training Gynae ward: Initial assessment and management of patients See emergency patients coming from A&E during the day (after 5pm the on-call SHO does this) Prescribing medications/TTAs/discharges On-call (day): During the on call ,the trainee is expected to do jobs appropriate to level of training: prescriptions, fluids and cannulas Complete ward jobs on antenatal and gynaecology wards See patients on ward 31 (antenatal patients, usually coming in with abdominal pain and other Complaints and complications of pregnancy) Assist with emergency c-sections On-call (weekend days): Ward cover -9am-1300 pm Long days, weekend days and nights as the rotas (below) state Theatre: See patients with specialty trainee/consultant pre-op Assisting in theatre Generating specimen/histology forms on ICE Discharge letters Minor theatre: Opportunity to do practical procedures appropriate to trainees’ level. Good place to do DOPS etc. Assist in C-sections: Ward rounds with consultants and registrars Attendance in clinics wherever possible Typical Rota working Monday – Thursday night (1 in 8 weeks) pattern in this Friday – Sunday nights (1 in 8 weeks) placement Friday – Sunday long days (1 in 8 weeks) Saturday-Sunday ward cover (1 in 8 weeks) Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday-1 long day per week start with the ward round on delivery suite with specialty trainee and consultant.
