Staff Nurse- Intensive Care Unit
The Luton and Dunstable Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit is a 7 bed capacity which caters critically
and acutely ill patients following a surgical procedure or brought about by an acute medical
condition. The unit cares for patients having 2 or more organ failure thus requiring advance
respiratory support. The ratio of the nurse to a patient is 1:1in order to provide an optimum level of
care.
TYPES OF PATIENTS:
 COPD and Respiratory Failure patients that are at risk of being intubated
 Severe Sepsis
 Status Epilepticus requiring ventilation
 Post- operative patients that have complications during the
surgery like moderate to severe blood loss that may require
inotropic support and ventilation











Diabetic Ketoacidosis that are too unstable to be managed in the medical ward
Cancer patients whose symptoms can still be supported in the intensive care set up
Post cardiac arrest
Victims of Road Traffic Accidents with numerous complications like Pneumothorax,
severe concussion resulting to significant neurological deficit, hypovolemic shock
Meningococcemia
Acute Renal Failure patients requiring hemofiltration
Maxillo-facial patients that have to remain ventilated for a period of time.
Patients who are bleeding with high risk for DIC
Patients with Guillain Barre at the acute phase which put them at high risk for advance
respiratory support
Necrotizing Fascitis patients
Patiemts with multiple organ failure that can still be managed in the ICU
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:





















Admits patients from the ward, operating room or from another hospital requiring invasive
ventilation and close monitoring.
Responsible for the total care of the patient which includes administration of medicines,
carrying out doctor’s orders promptly and effectively, assisting doctors in procedures and
treatments.
Assess, plans, implements, evaluates the goals of care and
documents all the care rendered.
Reports to the ICU Registrar for any significant changes in the health status of the patient.
Liaise with the other team members in planning the care of the day.
Able to perform basic cardio-pulmonary resuscitation
Uses the material resources to meet the patient’s needs.
Assists the family and carers to understand the health condition of the patient, the care and
treatments given to the patient and encourage the family to participate in the plan of care.
Prioritises the needs, problems, and intervenes accordingly
Promotes comfort, maintains patient’s privacy and dignity at all times
Ensures pressure areas are protected by regularly turning patients to their sides accordingly
Maintains safe patient transfer to the High Dependency Unit, to the ward or to another
hospital which includes but not limited to the physiological effects of transfer
Safeguarding the rights of the patients at their most vulnerable time
Being professional in dealing with irate patients and families
Keeping oneself updated with new policies and guidelines of the unit and of the institution
Communicates in a clear and concise manner taking into consideration the level of
understanding and cultural background of the patients and their family
Reports promptly any safety issues and suggest how this can be addressed

Obtains patient’s consent prior to rendering any interventions whenever possible

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:













Receives patients from the admitting ward, from another ward and from a special area
such as CCU, ITU HDU
Routinely admits patients from an outpatient appointment usually from endoscopy unit
who will be observed for the next day or two
Discharge patients to their own home of to a residential or nursing home where appropriate
Obtains vital signs, record it and report it to the doctor whenever there is a discrepancy
Proper documentations of events that had happen during my shift including complaints and
other unavoidable circumstances
Performs cannulation, Nasogastric tube and Foley Catheter insertion and removal of the
same when necessary
Assist doctors in doing minor procedures such as lumbar puncture, paracentesis, Central
Venous Line insertion
Giving health advice to patients and their relatives including health promotion, health
prevention and additional instruction in their present treatment
Serves as a mentor to student nurses in few occasions
In charge with doctor’s rounds
Administers medication including oral, intramuscular, intravenous, subcutaneous, rectal,
through CVP line
Performs blood transfusion, Capillary blood glucose monitoring, checks vital capacity and
peak flow reading, ECG recording
Coordinates with the other health team members like the physiotherapist, social worker,
nurse specialist
