North Central Thames Foundation School (NCTFS) Individual Placement Description - Luton and Dunstable Hospital NHS Foundation Trust Placement The department F2 Otolaryngology ENT has been a specialty at the L&D since its foundation in 1939. The hospital is also the Regional Centre for Head & Neck cancer, taking patients from Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and parts of Buckinghamshire. The type of work The F2 doctor is mainly responsible for the ward duties. They participate in the ward to expect and round and act upon any jobs that arise from it. They are first on-call for the ward and learning are expected to manage emergencies that arise. In this respect they are fully opportunities supported by senior members of the department. In addition to this they are often on call for ENT. The average take varies from day-to-day with some days being busier than others. On Thursday there is a team meeting and teaching. There is an expectation for the F2 doctor to actively participate in audit and journal clubs. The placement will enable the F2 doctor to deal with ENT emergencies, become familiar with ward management of head and neck patients, and teach them to interact with various members of the wider multi professional team. There may be occasions to go to theatre and clinic in the working day. Therefore, creating opportunities to learn basic surgical, specialised ENT and head and neck skills. ENT is a very procedure based specialty and as such trainees will have plenty of opportunity to learn basic ENT procedures such as; Nasoendoscopy and Microsuctioning of ears Location The surgical block at Luton & Dunstable Hospital was opened in 1983. There are three surgical wards with a total of 90 beds. The main theatre suite contains six theatres which are well equipped for laparoscopic surgery. There are six other theatres in the hospital covering Ophthalmology, Orthopaedics and Obstetrics & Gynaecology.
