Pre-Session Instructions
“Self-awareness is not an attention that gets carried away by emotions, overriding and amplifying what is
perceived. Rather, it is a neutral mode that maintains self-reflectiveness even amidst turbulent emotions.”
“Emotional Intelligence: Why it can matter more than IQ.” Daniel Goleman, page 47, 1994.
To help prepare you for the wellness retreat on Friday, June 27, 2014, we have provided two
articles and an on-line self-assessment. Please complete each item in order prior to attending
the session. During the session, you will complete your faculty portfolio with ‘action items’
based on some of the information gained in your pre-session activities. I look forward to working
with you.
1. One week prior to session:
 If you have never completed a personality preference or if it has been more than 10
years since you last completed one, please complete the free, on-line version (72,
short, items) at: http://www.humanmetrics.com/cgi-win/jtypes2.asp. Make sure to
write down your preference type.
My personality preference type is: _____________________
 Read the article: “Manage Your Energy Not Your Time” by Schwartz, T. & McCarthy,
C. (PDF attached in email.)
 Complete the “Are you heading for an Energy Crisis” self-assessment found on page
5 of the article. Write your total score here: _________________
2. Three days prior to session:
 Read the article: What Makes a Leader by Daniel Goleman. (PDF attached in email.)
 Based on the article, reflect on your own emotional intelligence: strengths and areas
for improvement.
3. Two days prior to the session:
 Print your portfolio and review but do not complete any items. You will complete
these during the session.
4. Day of session:
