DEAN’S DISTINGUISHED LECTURE “INNOVATION: LEADERSHIP AND STRATEGY IN TIMES OF UNCERTAINTY” Speaker: DR. JOHN D. EVANS VICE PRESIDENT, INTERNATIONAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY LOCKHEED MARTIN John D. Evans is Vice President, International Science and Technology for Lockheed Martin Corporation. In this capacity he represents the corporation’s 60,000 engineers and technologists in the development and execution of the Corporation’s international growth strategy. He established and leads a team of global technology experts who provide a single face to the global technical community, creating technology-based partnerships that support international sales pursuits, exemplify Lockheed Martin’s commitment to our international customers and provide Lockheed Martin with preferred access to global talent and technology. He established and operates the Center for Innovation and Security Solutions (CISS) at Masdar, Abu Dhabi, UAE, and the F-35 Virtual Analysis Laboratories in Ampthill, UK, and Melbourne, Australia (imminent). He is responsible for partnerships with 92 organizations across 20 countries. Prior to joining Lockheed Martin, he served as Program Manager for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), leading initiatives in the fields of space, communications, micro-technology, and nuclear energy. He has held positions as Chief Technical Officer for the west coast venture-funded start-up Microfabrica; lead MEMS scientist for Becton Dickinson; and energy consultant for the United States Congress Office of Technology Assessment (OTA). Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Dr. Evans earned a BA degree in physics from Carleton College; an MS in civil engineering and a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the University of California, Berkeley; and an MBA from Duke University. He is a Member of the Board and Vice President, International, of the American Institute of Aerospace and Astronautics (AIAA), where he also serves on the Governance Working Group, a board committee responsible for leading the redesign of AIAA. He is also a Member of the Board of the Industrial Research Institute (IRI), an association of 200 major industrial firms that serves as an authoritative source of innovation leadership solutions. He previously served on the Board of Lockheed Martin Saudi Arabia, the Industry Advisory Board for King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), and as Chair of the Executive Steering committee for the 2014 and 2015 AIAA SciTech conferences. He also served as host and sponsor for the 2009 and 2010 USA Science and Engineering Festivals. Dr. Evans is a member the American Society for Mechanical Engineering (ASME) and a senior member of the Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and an Associate Fellow of AIAA. Recognitions include the Maurice Holland Innovation Award (IRI), Office of Secretary of Defense Medal for Exceptional Public Service; the DARPA Innovation Award; the Charles Lofgren Carleton College Alumni Business Fellowship; and the Becton Dickinson Special Achievement Recognition Award.
