QUESTION:
What is garage separation?
CODE REFERENCE:
309.1 and 309.2
ANSWER:
Garage separation is the fire barrier that separates the garage from the residence. A garage is a
parking area that is more than 50% enclosed. A garage must be separated by ½” sheet rock on
walls and ceilings that are directly adjacent to the residence. Doors installed in such walls must
be 20 minute fire rated. All penetrations through walls and ceilings must be sealed by an
acceptable method (equivalent to permanent firestopping as described in R 602.7.) The sheet
rock must be taped and filled.
