NEWSLETTER Issue 27, January 2005 Back issues available on website: www.nesc.ac.uk Globus Toolkit 4 On 27th and 28th January, GridFTP technology coordinator Bill Allcock will introduce GridFTP and give hands on instructions for system administrators, developers and users. The Globus Alliance has re-implemented their highly popular GridFTP server to allow better, more flexible performance and functionality. GridFTP is a high-performance, secure, reliable data transfer protocol optimized for high-bandwidth wide-area networks. The GridFTP protocol is based on FTP, the highly-popular Internet file transfer protocol. A set of protocol features has been selected, with extensions defined already in IETF RFCs and added a few additional features to meet requirements from current data grid projects. The Globus Toolkit provides library interfaces to the GridFTP protocol, which will be the topic of these discussions. No previous knowledge is expected, and this event has been designed for individuals to get adequate exposure to the technology see how it may be applied. The tutorial is domainindependent, using simple, real-life examples. Funded by the DTI, IECnet will establish wide understanding of the potential of IEC in UK industry, particularly among the IT user community. This activity will follow through the e-Science Core Programme vision in which demanding scientific research stimulates significant advances in Grid technology which are then transferred to UK industry, healthcare and government. IECnet will undertake outreach activities, organise workshops and produce reports to inform and educate commercial vendors and users. IECnet is planned to start on February 1st. More information will appear in the NeSC newsletter when the activities are under way. For more information about Intellect, please refer to the web site: http://www.intellectuk.org/ NeSC started 2005 with the 10th International Conference on Database Theory. More details can be found on the website. Photo: NeSC Staff News 2005 sees the arrival of many new faces at the e-Science Institute in Edinburgh are Mr Ahmed Abdelrahim (PhD Student), Dr John Allen (Software System Consultant) and Dr Jos Koetsier (Software Developer for the BRIDGES project). We hope they all enjoy their time with us. The LCG Project is hiring people for Phase 2 of the project at CERN; fellowships and staff positions will be available for three-year contracts. Applications for the first round need to be done before the end of the month. http://cern.ch/LCG/jobs You can find details of e-Science vacancies across the UK and worldwide are found at: http://www.nesc.ac.uk/career Glasgow Access Grid If you would like to book time on the AG, please contact Susan Andrews on 0141 330 8648 andrewsm@dcs.gla.ac.uk NeSC Contact Details If you would like to hold an e-Science event at the e-Science Institute, please contact the Conference Manager at: National e-Science Centre, 15 South College Street, Edinburgh, EH8 9AA United Kingdom Tel: 0131 650 9833 Fax: 0131 650 9819 Email:events@nesc.ac.uk NEWS EXTRA Issue 27, January 2005 Back issues available on website: www.nesc.ac.uk NeSC Services Supporting UK e-Science Jobs Our jobs page shows e-Science vacancies across the UK. To add a position to this page, please mail Susan Andrews: andrewsm@dcs.gla.ac.uk Technical Report series The UK e-Science Technical Report series is available for publishing reports from any UK source. We organise the review of candidate reports, and welcome offers of reports and of help with reviewing. e-Science Projects NeSCForge NeSCForge is a SourceForge-like facility for supporting project development. Projects Database The Projects database stores information about e-Science projects. Please help us keep this up to date by sending additions and corrections to Susan Andrews. eSI Visitor Programme eSI runs a programme for international visitors. Their visit must be based at eSI, but we encourage visitors to help organise workshops and to visit other e-Science Centres. Please talk to our Research Manager Dave Berry, or the Director Malcolm Atkinson if you would like to suggest potential visitors. You can also email visitors@nesc.ac.uk with any suggestions.
