Globus Toolkit 4
On 27th and 28th January, GridFTP technology coordinator Bill Allcock will
introduce GridFTP and give hands on instructions for system administrators,
developers and users. The Globus Alliance has re-implemented their highly
popular GridFTP server to allow better, more flexible performance and
functionality. GridFTP is a high-performance, secure, reliable data transfer
protocol optimized for high-bandwidth wide-area networks. The GridFTP
protocol is based on FTP, the highly-popular Internet file transfer protocol. A set
of protocol features has been selected, with extensions defined already in IETF
RFCs and added a few additional features to meet requirements from current
data grid projects. The Globus Toolkit provides library interfaces to the GridFTP
protocol, which will be the topic of these discussions. More information at:

Training
The University of Manchester has
made an open invitation to a tutorial
covering ontology basics, engineering
and application on 1st and 2nd March.
No previous knowledge is expected,
and this event has been designed for
individuals to get adequate exposure
to the technology see how it may
be applied. The tutorial is domainindependent, using simple, real-life
examples. Details and registration

IECnet
NeSC has joined forces with Intellect,
the trade body for the UK ITC industry,
to establish a Knowledge Transfer
Network in Inter-Enterprise Computing
(IEC). Funded by the DTI, IECnet
will establish wide understanding of
the potential of IEC in UK industry,
particularly among the IT user
community.
This activity will follow through the
e-Science Core Programme vision in
which demanding scientific research
stimulates significant advances in
Grid technology which are then
transferred to UK industry, healthcare
and government.
IECnet will undertake outreach
activities, organise workshops and
produce reports to inform and educate
commercial vendors and users.
IECnet is planned to start on February
1st. More information will appear
in the NeSC newsletter when the
activities are under way.

The Projects database stores information about
e-Science projects. Please help us keep this up
to date by sending additions and corrections
to Susan Andrews.
eSI Visitor Programme
eSI runs a programme for international visitors.
Their visit must be based at eSI, but we
encourage visitors to help organise workshops
and to visit other e-Science Centres. Please
talk to our Research Manager Dave Berry, or
the Director Malcolm Atkinson if you would like
to suggest potential visitors. You can also email
visitors@nesc.ac.uk with any suggestions.
