NEWSLETTER Issue 29, March 2005 Back issues available on website: www.nesc.ac.uk OGSA-DAI Chosen for caBIG Following an extensive, in-depth evaluation, the US National Cancer Institute Center for Bioinformatics (NCICB) has chosen to use OGSA-DAI for its Cancer Biomedical Informatics Grid (caBIG) prototype project, taking place across fifty sites in order to integrate data from cancer research as part of the National Institutes for Health (NIH) fight against cancer. It was found that the rich, extensible support for service metadata expression in OGSA-DAI meant that it perfectly suited the needs of caBIG. More information about CaBIG can be found on the website: http://cabig.nci.nih.gov/ OGSA-DAI (Open Grid Services Architecture Data Access and Integration) is the result of a partnership between NeSC, EPCC, the universities of Manchester and Newcastle and IBM. This event is sponsored by the National e-Science Centre (NeSC). The meeting will communicate the latest status of Globus software and to enable intense conversation between Globus developers and users concerning future directions for open source Grid software. More information about this event can be found on the website: http://www.nesc.ac.uk/esi/events/519/ This month we welcome Dr Kostas Tourlas, who joins NeSC with the DAIT project, Mr Boon Low, who joins the EGEE Training team, Mr Stephen Davey, the Software Architect for NextGRID and Mr David Bon who replaces Andy Sullivan as Finance Officer. We hope they all enjoy their time here. Edikt loses two staff this month: technical architect Denise Ecklund returns to her native USA, and commercialisation manager Charles Gadalla returns to his home country of Canada. We wish them both the best of luck. Several job vacancies are available at NeSC, including EGEE Software Developer/Trainer and Accounts Officer (part-time). Commodity-based clusters and Grid computing technologies are rapidly developing, and are key components in the emergence of a novel servicebased fabric for high capability computing. Cluster-powered Grids not only provide access to cost-effective problem-solving power, but also promise to enable a more collaborative approach to the use of distributed resources, and new economic products and services. CCGrid2005, sponsored by the IEEE Computer Society is designed to bring together international leaders who are pioneering researchers, developers, and users of clusters, networks, and Grid architectures and applications. The symposium will also serve as a forum to present the latest work, and highlight related activities from around the world.
