e-Science at The Hague
The second EGEE (Enabling Grids for E-sciencE) conference was one of the
events taking place in the Netherlands under the banner “European Leadership
in e-Science and Grids” during the six months of the Dutch European presidency.
Other EC Research Infrastructure Grid projects also participated in this large
event where project partners will gather to discuss issues and work together.
After being welcomed by Patrick Aerts and Fabrizio Gagliardi, the programme
included the First Concertation Meeting on e-Infrastrutures, hosted by EGEE,
DILIGENT, DEISA, SEE-GRID and GN2, EGEE Cross Activity Meetings, and
other technical events where all EGEE project members could meet to share
and discuss their experiences.

Call for Mini-Workshop
Proposals
The Fourth UK e-Science All Hands
Meeting (AHM 2005) is scheduled to
be held 20-22 September 2005 at the
East Midlands Conference Centre in
Nottingham. Following the successful
mini-workshop programme at AHM
2004, it has been decided to continue
with this element of the programme and
proposals for mini-workshops are now
invited. Other modes of participation
in AHM 2005 will include oral
presentations of selected submitted
papers, posters, birds-of-a-feather
sessions, and tutorials. A call for these
will be issued in January 2005. Miniworkshops are sessions focused on a
particular topic that are organised by
individuals to bring together a number
of presenters in a panel or minisymposium format. These sessions
will be scheduled in parallel with
other conference sessions, but with
the expectation that individuals will
not move between sessions. Further
information is available at

ICDT 2005
NeSC Services
The Tenth International Conference
on Database Theory will take place
from 5 to 7 January 2005 in Edinburgh.
ICDT is a biennial scientific conference
on research on the foundations of
database systems. ICDT can be seen
as the European version of PODS
(the ACM Symposium on Principles of
Database Systems).

Grid Fabrics Seminar
Ed Smith, School of Informatics
will deliver this seminar, Dynamic
Reconfiguration for Grid Fabrics
at 4pm, 6th December 2004 at the
Edinburgh e-Science Institute.
The OGSAConfig project has spent the
past 15 months attempting to identify
configuration techniques that will help
to simplify the management of grid
fabrics for e-science.
This talk provides an overview of some
of the difficulties we see major e-science
grids facing, followed by discussion of
one of the techniques we developed to
help combat some of these problems.
Dynamic reconfiguration allows each
node in a grid fabric to take on different
behaviours depending on the needs of
the job that is running on it.
For more details about the OGSAConfig
project, see

Call for participation
DBiBD
The Database Issues in Biological
Databases workshop (in conjunction
with ICDT 2005) takes place on
January 8-9, 2005 in Edinburgh. It is
now more than ten years since the
database research community started
to look seriously at the problems of
biological databases. To what extent
has this research paid off, and to what
extent is the research “on track”? Also,
during those ten years, biologists
have started to make extensive use
of database technology. What are their
experiences, and what new issues
have emerged? The purpose of this
meeting is to bring together biologists
who are consumers of database
technology and database researchers
who are interested in the challenges
posed by the proliferation of biological
databases. The meeting will be an
informal workshop whose purpose is
to produce a report on the existing and
new challenges of biological data.

eSI Visitor Programme
eSI runs a programme for visiting researchers. Their visit must be based at
eSI, but we encourage visitors to help organise workshops and to visit other
e-Science Centres. Please talk to our Research Manager Dave Berry, or the
Director Malcolm Atkinson if you would like to suggest potential visitors. You
can also email visitors@nesc.ac.uk with any suggestions.
