Day 1 (19th March): Introduction to Infant and Preschool Lung Function Testing
(compulsory for all participants)
The first part of this course will be suitable for those with an interest in the field, whether or not they
have had any previous practical experience of infant lung function. Day 1 will consist of a series of
lectures providing background information on developmental physiology, special considerations
when assessing infants, an overview of tests (including video clips) that can be used to assess
infants and young children, and overviews on the use of infant lung function tests in a) clinical
research, b) epidemiological research and c) clinical management, the latter including discussions
on interpretation of results. An opportunity to visit the infant lung function lab at Great Ormond
Street Hospital for Children will also be provided for those not attending Day 2 & 3 of the course.
Day 2 (20th March): Theoretical background and practical tips for Infant Lung Function
Testing
The second part of the course will be aimed specifically at those who already have some
experience of infant lung function testing using the Jaeger/CareFusion MasterScreen BabyBody
device, at least in a supportive role. Tests that will be covered will be: tidal breathing, passive
respiratory mechanics, plethysmography and the tidal and raised volume rapid thoraco-abdominal
compression techniques.
This part of the course will focus on small group training and practical opportunities to calibrate
equipment, collect data using a lung model and reanalyse data (including that provided by
participants). Issues pertaining to quality control and data interpretation will be discussed, together
with interactive question and answer sessions to answer specific queries from delegates.
