Infant Lung Function Testing Training Course A 1, 2 or 3-day training course on Infant Lung Function Testing is to be held at the UCL, Institute of Child Health, 19th-21st March 2014 Course Directors: Prof Janet Stocks, Dr Ah Fong Hoo, Dr Sooky Lum Day 1 (19th March): Introduction to Infant and Preschool Lung Function Testing (compulsory for all participants) The first part of this course will be suitable for those with an interest in the field, whether or not they have had any previous practical experience of infant lung function. Day 1 will consist of a series of lectures providing background information on developmental physiology, special considerations when assessing infants, an overview of tests (including video clips) that can be used to assess infants and young children, and overviews on the use of infant lung function tests in a) clinical research, b) epidemiological research and c) clinical management, the latter including discussions on interpretation of results. An opportunity to visit the infant lung function lab at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children will also be provided for those not attending Day 2 & 3 of the course. Day 2 (20th March): Theoretical background and practical tips for Infant Lung Function Testing The second part of the course will be aimed specifically at those who already have some experience of infant lung function testing using the Jaeger/CareFusion MasterScreen BabyBody device, at least in a supportive role. Tests that will be covered will be: tidal breathing, passive respiratory mechanics, plethysmography and the tidal and raised volume rapid thoraco-abdominal compression techniques. This part of the course will focus on small group training and practical opportunities to calibrate equipment, collect data using a lung model and reanalyse data (including that provided by participants). Issues pertaining to quality control and data interpretation will be discussed, together with interactive question and answer sessions to answer specific queries from delegates. 1 Day 3 (21st March): Detailed analysis and interpretation of Infant Lung Function Tests This final part is designed specifically for those with prior experience of data collection and analysis using the Jaeger/CareFusion Masterscreen Babybody device. Participants are welcome to bring examples of their own data for re-analysis/interpretation. Attendance for Day 2 & 3 will be limited in order to provide one to one feedback where necessary, so early registration is advised.
