The BSF definition of Transformative Science has been adopted from the NSF and is: ““Research driven by ideas that have potential to radically change our understanding of an important scientific concept, or lead to the creation of a new paradigm, or a new field of science. Applications must be submitted jointly by at least one Israeli and one American scientist, as required in all BSF programs. FY 1010 funding will support projects that focus primarily on field production, including, but not limited to, genetic improvement, Biodiesel/bio-products, blackleg disease, health and nutrition, input cost reduction, pod shattering, and winter canola productions systems have been identified as high priority research areas for FY 2010. Priority will be given to applications that provide evidence of multi-state cooperation with a minimum of three state cooperators and to applications that utilize existing expertise and resources of the Agricultural Research Service, and the land-grant colleges and universities in this field of research. The goals of the PGG program are to foster the synthesis, analysis, and comparative study of data that will improve the understanding of the extent and influence of planetary geological and geophysical processes on the bodies of the Solar System. Supported research projects involve analysis and synthesis of existing data to investigate geological and geophysical processes and phenomena observed on natural objects within the Solar System. SBR seeks to advance fundamental science towards solutions to key DOE environmental challenges including carbon sequestration, contamination from past nuclear weapons production and a scien- tific basis for the long term stewardship of nuclear waste disposal. The activity supports an integrated portfolio of research ranging from molecular to field scales with emphasis on the use of advanced computer models and multidisciplinary, interactive, experimentation to understand and predict contaminant transport in complex subsurface environments. This call is for ground-based research that may eventually lead to research on the International Space Station (ISS). Because some of the selections may be considered for a future flight experiment, the proposers must show a clear path from the proposed groundbased research to an experiment that can feasibly be conducted in the Low Gradient Furnace (LGF) or the Solidification and Quenching Furnace (SQF) on the ISS. Proposals submitted in response to this NRA will use a two-step process. Only PIs submitting Step-1 proposals determined to be relevant to the solicited research on this NRA will be invited to submit full Step-2 proposals.
