Limited Submissions
Limited submission programs have
sponsor restrictions on the number of
proposals that may be submitted by a
single institution and will require institutional screening to determine which
applications will be submitted. Dr. Jim
Guikema, Associate Vice President for
Research, is the internal coordinator for
limited submission programs. Please
notify him at 785-532-6195, email:
guikema@ksu.edu, by the Internal due
date listed in the Funding Bulletin or by
at least two months prior to the sponsor
deadline if you wish to submit to a limited submission program. Currently
posted Internal Deadlines: http://www.kstate.edu/research/funding/bulletins/

GENERAL
14-1 Transformative Science (BSF)
The U.S.--Israel Binational Science Foundation (BSF) is pleased to announce the
opening of the first round of applications
in its new program devoted to Transformative Science grants. The BSF definition of
Transformative Science has been adopted
from the NSF and is: ““Research driven by
ideas that have potential to radically
change our understanding of an important
scientific concept, or lead to the creation of
a new paradigm, or a new field of science.
Applications must be submitted jointly by
at least one Israeli and one American scientist, as required in all BSF programs.

planting, cultivation, harvesting, processing, and transfer of such applied research
from experimental sites to on farm practice as soon as practicable. FY 1010
funding will support projects that focus
primarily on field production, including,
but not limited to, genetic improvement,
Biodiesel/bio-products, blackleg disease,
health and nutrition, input cost reduction,
pod shattering, and winter canola productions systems have been identified as
high priority research areas for FY 2010.
Priority will be given to applications that
provide evidence of multi-state cooperation with a minimum of three state cooperators and to applications that utilize
existing expertise and resources of the
Agricultural Research Service, and the
land-grant colleges and universities in
this field of research. USDA-NIFA-OP003098 (GG 4/1/10)

ENGINEERING, MATHEMATICS
& PHYSICAL SCIENCES
14-3 Planetary Geology and
Geophysics (NASA)
The Planetary Geology and Geophysics
(PGG) program supports scientific investigations of planetary surfaces and interiors, satellites (including the Moon),
satellite and ring systems, and smaller
Solar System bodies such as asteroids
and comets. The goals of the PGG program are to foster the synthesis, analysis,
and comparative study of data that will
improve the understanding of the extent
and influence of planetary geological and
geophysical processes on the bodies of
the Solar System. Supported research
projects involve analysis and synthesis of
existing data to investigate geological
and geophysical processes and phenomena observed on natural objects within
the Solar System. NNH10ZDA001NPGG (GG 3/31/10)

14-4 Subsurface Biogeochemical
Research (DOE)
The Office of Science (SC), U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announces interest in receiving applications for research
grants for Subsurface Biogeochemical
Research (SBR), which is within the Climate and Environmental Sciences Division (CESD) in the Office of Biological
and Environmental Research (BER).
SBR seeks to advance fundamental science towards solutions to key DOE environmental challenges including carbon
sequestration, contamination from past
nuclear weapons production and a scien-
tific basis for the long term stewardship of
nuclear waste disposal. The activity supports an integrated portfolio of research
ranging from molecular to field scales
with emphasis on the use of advanced
computer models and multidisciplinary,
interactive, experimentation to understand and predict contaminant transport in
complex subsurface environments. DEFOA-0000311 (GG 3/24/10)

14-5 Research Opportunities in
Materials Science (NASA)
Proposals are solicited by the Exploration
Systems Mission Directorate (ESMD)
Advanced Capabilities Division for
hypothesis-driven materials science
research investigations in the following
areas: thermophysical data, microstructural development and morphological
evolution. This call is for ground-based
research that may eventually lead to
research on the International Space Station (ISS). Because some of the selections
may be considered for a future flight
experiment, the proposers must show a
clear path from the proposed groundbased research to an experiment that can
feasibly be conducted in the Low Gradient Furnace (LGF) or the Solidification
and Quenching Furnace (SQF) on the
ISS. Proposals submitted in response to
this NRA will use a two-step process.
Only PIs submitting Step-1 proposals
determined to be relevant to the solicited
research on this NRA will be invited to
submit full Step-2 proposals.

14-6 FY2010 Energy Efficient
Building Systems Regional Innovation
Cluster Initiative (DOE)
This joint FOA is the first pilot project of
the Interagency Regional Innovation
Clusters Taskforce (Taskforce). The Taskforce has been charged with developing a
replicable and sustainable model for coordinated federal and regional efforts that
foster and use regional innovation clusters
to develop and demonstrate sustainable
and efficient models for attaining national
strategic objectives; create and retain
Good Jobs; eliminate gaps between the
supply and demand for workers in specialized fields through training and education; increase regional gross domestic
product (GDP); promote innovation in
science and technology; and enhance the
economic, technological, and commercial competitiveness of the United States
on the global stage. The E-RIC must
operate within a defined geographic
region that includes a geographicallybounded, active network of similar, syner-

14-7 Advanced Technological
Education (NSF)
14-10 DoD Breast Cancer Idea Award
(DOD)
With an emphasis on two-year colleges,
the Advanced Technological Education
(ATE) program focuses on the education
of technicians for the high-technology
fields that drive our nation’s economy.
The program involves partnerships
between academic institutions and
employers to promote improvement in the
education of science and engineering
technicians at the undergraduate and secondary school levels. The ATE program
supports curriculum development; professional development of college faculty and
secondary school teachers; career pathways to two-year colleges from secondary
schools and from two-year colleges to
four-year institutions; and other activities.

The Idea Award is designed to promote
new ideas that are still in the early stages
of development and have the potential to
yield highly impactful data and new avenues of investigation. Research projects
should include a well-formulated, testable
hypothesis based on strong scientific
rationale. The BCRP seeks applications
from all areas of basic, translational, clinical, behavioral, and epidemiological
research. Innovation and Impact are the
most important aspects of the Idea Award.
