Limited Submissions
Limited submission programs have
sponsor restrictions on the number of
proposals that may be submitted by a
single institution and will require institutional screening to determine which
applications will be submitted. Dr. Jim
Guikema, Associate Vice President for
Research, is the internal coordinator for
limited submission programs. Please
notify him at 785-532-6195, email:

GENERAL
6-1 Assessment and Quantification of
Training and Land Management
Practices (DoD)
Responses to this Request for Statements
of Interest will be used to identify potential
investigators for a project to be funded by
the Engineering Research Development
Center (ERDC) which seeks to identify
and facilitate the collection and distribution of information on military lands managed by the Army Integrated Training
Area Management (ITAM) program.
Results will be used by ERDC and the
Army to develop optimal land management approaches, project needs, and to
coordinate information sharing between
the Department of the Army and general
public. Review of Statements of Interest
will begin ten workdays after posting on
the Colorado Plateau, Great Plains, and
Piedmont-South Atlantic Coast Cooperative Ecosystems Study Unit websites (2/

Transformative Science (BSF)
The U.S. - Israel Binational Science
Foundation (BSF) is pleased to announce
the opening of the 4th round of applications in its new research grants program
devoted to Transformative Science. The
BSF definition of Transformative Science has been adopted from the NSF and
is: Research driven by ideas that have
potential to radically change our understanding of an important scientific concept, or lead to the creation of a new
paradigm, or a new field of science. Such
research is also characterized by its challenge to current understanding or by its
pathways to new frontiers. Proposals will
be evaluated first and foremost on their
transformative nature, but naturally also
need to exhibit scientific excellence.
Applications must be submitted jointly
by at least one Israeli and one Americanscientist, as required in all BSF programs.

6-8 Space Vehicles (RV) University
Grants Program (DoD)
The Air Force Research Laboratory’s
Space Vehicles Directorate (AFRL/RV)
leads the nation in space supremacy
research and development. AFRL/RV’s
mission is to develop and transition innovative high-payoff space technologies
supporting the warfighter, while leveraging commercial, civil, and other space
capabilities to ensure America’s advantage. AFRL/RV is seeking U.S. and U.S.
Territory universities/colleges to propose
grants for space-based basic and applied
research that are of interest to the Department of Defense (DoD). Specifically, the
objective is to encourage students’ and
professors’ interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics
(STEM) to help meet long-term national
defense needs of the United States for
personnel proficient in STEM. The focus
of AFRL/RV is on research areas that
offer significant and comprehensive benefits to our national war-fighting and
peacekeeping capabilities. These areas
are organized and managed in five overarching Core Technology Competences
(CTCs): Space Electro-Optical and Infrared Sensing (EO/IR), Space Electronics,
Space Environmental Impacts and Mitigation, Space Platforms & Operations
Technologies, and Space Experiments.

6-10 Neuroimmune Signaling and
Function in Substance Use Disorders
(R01) (NIH)
The purpose of this Funding Opportunity
Announcement (FOA) is to encourage the
submission of research project grant
applications that propose to examine the
molecular, cellular, circuit, and behavioral
responses to neuroimmune signaling
within the central nervous system (CNS)
as it pertains to the initiation, escalation,
and maintenance of, and the neurological
consequences resulting from, substance
use disorders (SUDs), and to abstinence
and withdrawal from, and subsequent
relapse of, drug use. The goal of this
understudied area of research is to determine the extent to which neuroimmune
responses contribute to or protect against
current and future risk and consequences
of SUDs. PA-14-084 (NIHG 2/7/14)

SOCIAL SCIENCES
6-11 Research and Evaluation on
Children Exposed to Violence (DOJ)
The National Institute of Justice is seeking multidisciplinary research and evaluation proposals related to childhood
exposure to violence. In particular, NIJ
seeks applications that address polyvictimization, Internet harassment/electronic aggression (e.g, bullying through
Facebook, harassing e-mails), resilience,
or justice system responses to children
identified as being exposed to violence.
For the purposes of this solicitation, Children Exposed to Violence (CEV) encompasses a broad area that includes children
as both direct victims and as bystanders or
observers of various forms of violence in
the home, school, or community (including, but not limited to, peer victimization/
bullying/harassment, child maltreatment,
domestic violence, and community violence). This solicitation may be used to
address other types of violence to which
children are exposed, with the exception
of media violence (e.g., television and
movie violence, music advocating aggression, and violent video games). NIJ-20143745 (GG 2/11/14)

Deadline: 4/25/2014
6-12 Research and Evaluation on the
Abuse, Neglect, and Exploitation of
Elderly Individuals (DOJ)
With this solicitation, NIJ seeks applications for funding of research and evaluation related to abuse, neglect, and
exploitation of elderly individuals and
residents of residential care facilities.
Research proposed may be focused at the
State, local, tribal, Federal, or juvenile
criminal justice policy, and practice level.
Current demographic trends show that our
society is aging rapidly, and the number
of people living in residential care facilities is rising. Crimes against these populations are similarly expected to increase.
Given the paucity of evidence-based data
in the field, additional research is urgently
needed to inform, evaluate, and improve
the efficacy of efforts to protect elderly
individuals and residents of residential
care facilities and to hold perpetrators of
abuse accountable for their crimes. NIJ2014-3750 (GG 2/11/14)
