The BSF definition of Transformative Science has been adopted from the NSF and is: Research driven by ideas that have potential to radically change our understanding of an important scientific concept, or lead to the creation of a new paradigm, or a new field of science. Such research is also characterized by its challenge to current understanding or by its pathways to new frontiers. Proposals will be evaluated first and foremost on their transformative nature, but naturally also need to exhibit scientific excellence. Applications must be submitted jointly by at least one Israeli and one Americanscientist, as required in all BSF programs. AFRL/RV’s mission is to develop and transition innovative high-payoff space technologies supporting the warfighter, while leveraging commercial, civil, and other space capabilities to ensure America’s advantage. AFRL/RV is seeking U.S. and U.S. Territory universities/colleges to propose grants for space-based basic and applied research that are of interest to the Department of Defense (DoD). Specifically, the objective is to encourage students’ and professors’ interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) to help meet long-term national defense needs of the United States for personnel proficient in STEM. The focus of AFRL/RV is on research areas that offer significant and comprehensive benefits to our national war-fighting and peacekeeping capabilities. These areas are organized and managed in five overarching Core Technology Competences (CTCs): Space Electro-Optical and Infrared Sensing (EO/IR), Space Electronics, Space Environmental Impacts and Mitigation, Space Platforms & Operations Technologies, and Space Experiments. In particular, NIJ seeks applications that address polyvictimization, Internet harassment/electronic aggression (e.g, bullying through Facebook, harassing e-mails), resilience, or justice system responses to children identified as being exposed to violence. For the purposes of this solicitation, Children Exposed to Violence (CEV) encompasses a broad area that includes children as both direct victims and as bystanders or observers of various forms of violence in the home, school, or community (including, but not limited to, peer victimization/ bullying/harassment, child maltreatment, domestic violence, and community violence). This solicitation may be used to address other types of violence to which children are exposed, with the exception of media violence (e.g., television and movie violence, music advocating aggression, and violent video games). Research proposed may be focused at the State, local, tribal, Federal, or juvenile criminal justice policy, and practice level. Current demographic trends show that our society is aging rapidly, and the number of people living in residential care facilities is rising. Crimes against these populations are similarly expected to increase. Given the paucity of evidence-based data in the field, additional research is urgently needed to inform, evaluate, and improve the efficacy of efforts to protect elderly individuals and residents of residential care facilities and to hold perpetrators of abuse accountable for their crimes.
