Limited Submissions
Limited submission programs have
sponsor restrictions on the number of
proposals that may be submitted by a
single institution and will require institutional screening to determine which
applications will be submitted. Dr. Jim
Guikema, Associate Vice Provost for
Research, is the internal coordinator for
limited submission programs. Please
notify him at 785-532-6195, email:
guikema@ksu.edu, by the Internal due
date listed in the Funding Bulletin (FB
5-4) or by at least two months prior to
the sponsor deadline if you wish to submit to a limited submission program.

GENERAL
5-1 Foundations of Data and Visual
Analytics (FODAVA) (NSF)
With this solicitation, the National Science
Foundation (NSF) and the Department of
Homeland Security (DHS) invite research
proposals whose outcomes will enable
data stakeholders to detect the expected
and discover the unexpected in massive
data sets. Proposals should focus on creating fundamental research advances that
will be widely applicable across scientific,
engineering, commercial, and governmental domains that utilize visualization and
analytics to gain insight and derive knowledge from massive, often streaming,
dynamic, ambiguous and possibly conflicting, data sets. Research activities proposed
should emphasize novel data transformations, while also demonstrating research
relevance to visual analytics systems by
including a research component in areas
such as, but not limited to, visualization,
human-computer interaction, and cognitive psychology. An individual may appear
as PI, co-PI, Senior Personnel, or Consultant on no more than two FODAVA-Partner
proposals submitted to any annual
FODAVA competition. (NSF 09-525)

5-2 Biomass Research and
Development Initiative (DOE/USDA)
The objectives of this Initiative are to
develop: technologies and processes necessary for abundant commercial production of biofuels at prices competitive
with fossil fuels; high-value biobased
products to enhance the economic viability of biofuels and power; to serve as
substitutes for petroleum-based feedstocks and products; and to enhance the
value of coproducts produced using the
technologies and processes; and a diversity of economically and environmentally sustainable domestic sources of
renewable biomass for conversion of
biofuels, bioenergy and biobased products. (GG 1/30/09)

ARTS & HUMANITIES
5-3 Landmarks of American
History and Culture: Workshops for
Community College Faculty and
School Teachers (NEH)
As part of NEH’s We the People program, the Landmarks of American History and Culture program supports a
series of one-week residence-based
workshops for a national audience of
community college educators and a
series for school teachers. The workshops use historic sites to address central
themes and issues in American history,
government, literature, art history, and
other related subjects in the humanities.

ENGINEERING, MATHEMATICS
& PHYSICAL SCIENCE
5-4 Nanotechnology Undergraduate
Education (NUE) in Engineering
(NSF)
This Solicitation aims at introducing
nanoscale science, engineering, and technology through a variety of interdisciplinary approaches into undergraduate
engineering education. The focus of this
year’s competition is on nanoscale engineering education with relevance to
devices and systems and/or on the societal, ethical, economic and/or environmental issues relevant to
nanotechnology. Only one proposal may
be submitted by a US academic institution, College/Department of Engineering or College/Department of
Engineering Technology as the lead institution with the following exception: A US
academic institution may submit a second
proposal as the lead institution, only if it
is focused on the societal, ethical, economic and/or environmental issues relevant to nanotechnology. NSF 09-533

5-5 Domestic Nuclear Detection
Office-National Science Foundation
Academic Research Initiative (ARI)
(NSF)
In FY 2009, the Domestic Nuclear Detection Office (DNDO) within the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will
invest, in partnership with the National
Science Foundation (NSF), in frontier
research at academic institutions. This
transformational research effort will be
focused on detection systems, individual
sensors or other research that is potentially relevant to the detection of nuclear
weapons, special nuclear material, radiation dispersal devices and related threats.
The joint DNDO-NSF effort, in coordination with the efforts of other agencies,
seeks to advance fundamental knowledge
in new technologies for the detection of
nuclear threats and to develop intellectual
capacity in fields relevant to long-term
advances in nuclear detection capability.
An individual researcher may not be
named as a participant on more than one
proposal submitted to this solicitation.

5-6 Collaboration in Mathematical
Geosciences (CMG) (NSF)
The purpose of the Collaboration in
Mathematical Geosciences (CMG) activity is to enable collaborative research at
the intersection of mathematical sciences
and geosciences, and to encourage crossdisciplinary education. Projects should
fall within one of three broad themes: 1)
mathematical and statistical modeling of
complex geosystems, 2) understanding
and quantifying uncertainty in geosystems, or 3) analyzing large/complex geoscience data sets. Research groups must
include at least one mathematical/statistical scientist and at least one geoscientist.

(ARP) funds research to improve the lives
of individuals with autism spectrum disorders. The FY09 ARP encourages proposals that specifically address critical
needs of the Autism Spectrum Disorders
(ASD) community in the following areas:
Co-morbidity: (e.g., manifestations such
as disorders [gastrointestinal, sleep,
behavioral, speech/language], psychiatric,

5-9 NHLBI Progenitor Cell Biology
Consortium Research Hubs (NIH)
The National Heart, Lung, and Blood
Institute (NHLBI) invites applications to
participate in the NHLBI Progenitor Cell
Biology Consortium. The goal of the
Consortium is to identify and characterize
progenitor cell lineages, to direct the differentiation of stem and progenitor cells
to desired cell fates, and to develop new
strategies to address the unique challenges presented by the transplantation of
these cells. The Consortium will assemble
clusters of synergistic research projects,
each with a multi-disciplinary team of
Principal Investigators, to establish virtual Research Hubs focused on progenitor
cell biology. The Consortium will also
contain core research support facilities
and skills development components.
Research Hub applications must consist
of a cluster of two to four synergistic
applications, each of which must derive
from a separate R03 application funded
through RFA-HL-08-012. Applicants
must submit only one application as PI/
PD; participation in additional applications as co-investigator is permitted provided they are scientifically distinct. Only
one Lead PI/PD application, and only two
U01 applications in total, may be derived
from any R03 application. RFA-HL-09004 (NIHG 1/30/09)

ORI encourages grant applications from
institutions/organizations that propose to
study research integrity as it relates to collaborative interactions and/or activities.
The R21 exploratory/developmental
mechanism will be used to foster research
where there are few published data and
where problem areas that would benefit
from further investigation could be identified. Applications must address the influence of collaborative interactions and/or
activities on research integrity in at least

The high rates of mental health and
behavioral adjustment problems among
recent U.S. military combat veterans, and
the increasing rates of suicide among
Army soldiers, are of growing concern.
This Funding Opportunity Announcement
(FOA), issued by the National Institute of
Mental Health (NIMH), in collaboration
